Getting lost in looking all the little details. Fun to toggle path tracing (2nd and 4th screenshot enabled) to see how materials react. It's subtle and not worth the perf loss during gameplay but for screenshots, it's super fun 🙂

I've been hearing that one's gorgeous.  Definitely on my list of future benchmark titles.  🤣

Well, if they're claiming that "1080p / LOW settings / 30 FPS" is the bare minimum to be playable, I'd like to simply argue that maybe the bare minimum specs are perhaps closer to this.....because this was absolutely "playable" (on a generic 1080p / 60Hz panel).

$700 sounds pretty decent. I finally got around to redoing my bedroom gaming rig this weekend and I tossed in the 6950XT. I picked it up for $600 and thought I got a good deal. Which it was at the time. However, outside of using it in one of my product reviews, it's just sat on a shelf the past year. If I knew I'd put it off this long I could have just got the 7900XT 😂

That said, I love the build. First all AMD system in probably a decade or more. I have it paired with a 7800X3D and it's a beast 1440p machine. I set a mild undervolt and an FPS cap to just under monitor refresh rate. With those changes it is a pretty power efficient system.

If AMD GPUs were even remotely comparable to Nvidia for Folding@Home, I'd buy a bunch of their cards.

I've got my 6900XT on 4k duty on my TV, with the 5800x.  Does a fantastic job on a TV.  For the harder to run titles, I just dump the resolution down a little and its fine.  Literally can't even tell a difference from the couch lol.

To be fair, you've already got RTX 3000 series cards and 4000 series.  The RX 6000 series are honestly a more "interesting" card than the 7900 is anyway.  7900 is faster yes, does RT waaay better, yes.  The 6000 was a weird gen though, seems like Nvidia and RT took AMD off guard or something that gen.

Might be worthwhile for hwbot points, and potentially future benches for PCI graphics cards.  Hwbot rules do get weird on some of those competitions.

I'd put Windows 7 + 8.1 rigs into that category as well.  I think that'd be reasonable enough, no?  Nobody's playing on Phenom II's, FX's, and Sandy Bridge / Ivy Bridge these days unless you're actively trying to (the era those OS's are).

could've sworn Intel did it first with Nehalem but just did a Google and you're right 🙃

Asrock had a couple dual socket 754/939 boards with a single chipset too (K8M800 or M1689 depending), but no weird RAM shenanigans on those

Yup!  There were also some 754 boards with PCIe that shouldn't have existed, and some Socket 939 with AGP slots too.  Going to Intel, they also had crossover style boards, also ASRock (they were good about those crossover boards back then).  I have a Core 2 Duo supporting board that rocks an AGP slot for example. 🙂

that was before the IMC moved to the CPU ... so couldn't/shouldn't it be DDR2🤔

K8 (Socket 939) the IMC was on die (first AMD socket to have it).  So nope, DDR400 it is.  You're right, the board SHOULD have DDR2 or DDR3 given its a 785g chipset.  That's why I love that board.  It really "shouldn't" exist.  🤣

I tried that once in person with a xbox controller at a Walmart. (don't judge me, I'm not usually a corrupter LOL)

I was mighty impressed the dude checked the serial number on the receipt to the controller. LMAO.

    ❤️

Yeah, Walmart learned their lessons with the 2TB Western Digital Green HDD's we all used to snag out of the enclosures and return dead drives in them.......  I mean, not "we", I certainly never did such a thing 20 years ago in Mexico.........  🤣

The ol' switcheroo doesn't really work that much anymore tbh.  Second hand, and securing an absolutely solid deal is somehow a LOT more fulfilling, and fun even.

  10. Also:  ISO a large tower case with LOTS of 5.25 bays..........  🤣

One day, one day.  This is more a teaser for @LabRatthan anything since I'll probably never find the case I need for this board.

    ASRock crossover style board, 785G chipset, but on Socket 939.  785G was an AM2+ / AM3 chipset for Phenom II's.  Socket 939 was K8 (Athlon64 / Athlon64 x2's).  DDR2 vs DDR1.  This board literally shouldn't have existed.  🙂

If you're talking about a Bluetooth headset, They just don't work as well for gaming. Some games just won't really work with a Bluetooth headset when trying to use the mic and headphones from a Bluetooth headset at the same time.

I would go the Bluetooth route myself if it were more viable.

Can confirm as well, I had nothing but problems trying to use my bluetooth headset at my PC.  Some games the audio would still go through my speakers, sometimes the voice comms would be the only thing going through the headphones, and some games, things just worked correctly.  It was a mess trying to get it working correctly.

It would be VERY nice if there was a wireless option that just worked right out of the box.

Sorry E, I really don't have much to comment on here except avoid bluetooth "headsets" if you can.  That's just from my own experience though.  YMMV, as usual.

  12. I thought it ended at 4pm PST, not 4am. -_-.  Wasted 12 hours of high electricity usage.

Either way, was super fun!  That was my first time EVER getting a top 10 spot.  ❤️ my 7900XTX and 7900x system for this.  🤣

    EDIT:

AHHHHHHHHH ITS FREAKING QUIET IN HERE NOW OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I've had deafening screeching reference blower fans going for a week, and now silence.  AHHHHHH!!!!!!!  🤣

Can confirm on Windows 11 latest Chrome that the issue looks to be fixed.

    1) Loading the main page and hitting Enter does nothing now.

    2) Loading the main page and clicking in the search box and hitting Enter loads the Search Page

    3) Loading the main page, clicking a Carousel item which opens in a new tab, returning to the main page tab and hitting Enter will open the selected review again, but clicking somewhere else on the page then hitting Enter does nothing as expected.

Figured why not, and I tried these same EXACT steps.

Can also confirm - seems fixed.

  14. Oh I'm now starting to see the difference.  Those aliexpress 580's only have 2048SP vs the standard 580's 2304SP's.  Got it.  So its a weaker RX 580, but with more VRAM.  Interesting.  It's basically a RX 570 with slightly higher stock clocks.  Very interesting.  Guess they have to do something with all the leftover Polaris dies.

  15. Bump.

I'm in the prepping stages, and searching out for an editor for gameplay videos in Ultrawide resolution.  Modern and old games (old games will be 16:9).  Would like to try to corner that niche market since nobody makes ultrawide gaming videos.  Would like to see them help EHW if possible. 🙂  Let me know if that'll help at all (once I've got an editor lined up).

Thank you everyone for the advice.  So whats the chip called exactly nowadays that the silicon is on?  Also I think underneath the chip is where the problem is & I think I'll try & source some 99% isopropyl alcohol & some of that good high quality CRC cleaner you speak of, can I get it at ACE hardware or Walmart even preferably?  Do they sell 99% isopropyl alcohol at Walmart, i thought they only sold up to 91%...  Thanks

The die?  Or are you talking about the actual GPU socket that the die sits on?  Not sure what you'd technically call it tbh.  I also just woke up too lol.

Anything 70%+ is fine, but definitely want 90%+ if you can for cleaning electronics.  70% is fine though, just takes longer to dry.

Thanks man yeah my msi reference 480 has an asic quality of 68% so it needs 1.050v just for 1250mhz core minimum & its 8 hours stable @ 5k ultra call of duty wwii.

These chinese rx 580 2040sp models have strong asic quality of 80%+ so im sure they can clock well.  This guy though couldn't get 1400 stable at 1.2v, needed to back it off to 1355 for stability long term at 1.2v.  Since then he stopped talking to me so idk how well it's running.

I'd love to get my hands on a $100 16GB rx 580 2048sp from Aliexpress China bro with that excellent asic quality they would be fun cards to own especially with 16GB to play around with for a while until I get a stronger card.

    16GB RX 580's?!?!?

Stahp it bro.  🤣  I'm so sick and tired of RX 580's, I've had I want to say 24 of them to date.  I really REALLY don't want to think about RX 580's anymore.  But 16GB 580's???????????  You've piqued my interest. -_-

Do you lose any features going to these?

Nope, not at all.  You're actually given the option between installing 4 different styles of CCC control panel.  Personally, I usually install the standard "Adrenaline" version of CCC.  I've seen others install the Pro version though.

You can literally mix and match your driver kernal and your version of CCC.  They've even backported the AFMF feature back onto every driver released in 2023.  (Note: AFMF only works on 6000 and 7000 series cards though)

Just a side note about AMD drivers, one thing I love is the control panel and tuning options. The control panel is way better than Nvidia's. No need to sign in to anything to record videos. System tuning options for CPU and GPU built in. I used the control panel to auto OC my CPU, and I have my GPU a little underclocked and set to quiet mode. I never hear the fans ramp up at all and the performance difference seems to be entirely negligible.

Agreed.  I actually do REALLY appreciate the Adrenaline interface of CCC much moreso than Nvidia's 1998 style.  And that's coming from a retro gamer.  🤣  Nvidia's driver DOES have the advantage of their UI being the same across the years and releases though.  I guess that's a plus.
