Nameless LGA 775 build

Finally integrated the 4 port KVM switch and the home lab is up and running. NAS, Bench and 775 Bench are all swappable now. I took the SSD off the 775 and removed and formatted the drive with disk part. Attempting to reinstall win7.

Good luck with the ssd. I too have recently killed an ssd from corruption. Luckily mine was just a 120gb adata, but a drive loss is still a drive loss. It won't keep me from doing ssd's, but maybe look into older types of ssd's? I forgot the type, but I picked up some old hp 64gb ssd's that seem to be a lot more robust as far as using on old rigs. 

 

The setup is looking great!

You should also be able to bypass the issue if you use a PCI-e HBA/RAID card. You could try to find some Toshiba Toggle Nand SSDs.

Thank you for the suggestion. Still, it pisses me off that it was working and now wont, even with a new drive.  I'm tempted to try and run it off a USB stick.

Ok, so the build is apart. What does a man do with 3 Nforce 790i ultra boards and 5 QX6850s? He removes the retention bracket on a board and delids a CPU to test if direct die on an LGA 775 is possible of course! I did damage the pcb on the chip while delidding. I don't know yet if it effected the function. The conformal coating is what you see fluorescing under UV lighting. The metal bracket on the mobo will most certainly require delicate dremmeling. Shouldn't be hard at all right?

 

If anyone is wondering, THIS is the conformal coating I am using. It is highly toxic, so if you decide to get it please use gloves, mask and proper ventilation. It really helps being able to UV fluoresce contact points on a pcb.

Anytime i see 775 I think GO SLACR.  Can't remember anything other then I paid for the specific stepping and it overclocked well.

So the delidded chip functions. I have begun prepping the motherboard with conformal coating around the 4 cooler mounting holes that will also cover with thermal tape. I have struggled with a mounting solution for the EK Velocity 1151 block that I intend to use. I will have to use nuts on the reverse side of the board for the block standoffs and there is no room for a silicon washer, hence the conformal and thermal tape as there are traces that would be contacted by the nuts. I completely covered the QX6850 in conformal and will drop it in the socket to test contact with the EK block. Once I can confirm it makes contact with the CPU, I will apply LM and secure it in place. 5mm spacers seem to be a good height to prevent any bowing or loss of contact mid block to the CPU itself. I will add pictures tonight. 

 

I will also delid one of the Q9650s and have it ready to test as well. I envision a hybrid design with hard tubing for the CPU/NB/SB/Mosfet and RAM water blocks with Koolance QDC's to soft tubing for the rads. It should be a pretty wicked rev 2.0.

I had been waiting to see one on ebay for over 2 years. So rare. I couldn't believe it when I saw it listed.
