My all core OC doesn't have anything like PBO Enabled as I figured it was best to leave PBO off and remove it as a factor when going manual OC. 

 

My 'Raven_A' dual mobo build has a separate cooling table, with total cooling area of 2520mm x 63mm. Of that, the 5950X gets 1320mm x 63mm dual and triple-core rads w/ push-pull fans and triple D5s (which I had to slow down due to cavitation...). The 5950X stays in the 70 C max w/ that on high-speed runs like above, else it is usually low 60s. Zen 2+ and Zen3 have boost algorithms that react very well to even a small decrease in temps. 

 

Unlike all that modding and tuning I did on earlier-gen CPUs during my HWBot days, I find Zen3 is best served with all the right bios options tuned on, and then given really good cooling - but not much else. Bonus: RTX 3090 Strix, with similar boost algo-to-temp parameters, loves that cooling setup too 🙂

EDIT:  I'm also determined to have last place.  I knew I had no chance of a podium finish, but I can easily take last place. 🙂

I love running older rigs as well (within reason, which incidentally excludes the T4300 @ 2.1 Ghz laptop below 🤣) ...my fav oldie is 'Crazy Horse', a 6c/12t quad-channel 4960X ES chip in an Asus X79-E WS mobo and 64GB of DDR3 2400...I call it Crazy Horse as that engineering sample does 4.9 GHz at less than the stock TDP, yet also has one core which will always report well-below ambient temp at idle and light tasks. It gets in line at full load, though. As long as an older rig has plenty of for-its-day fast RAM and a SSD, I can live with it for a short while / light tasks.

 

@Storm-Chaser ...slowest two runs for the ''speedster'' below, but I can slow the T4300 at 2.1 Ghz thing down more, if needed...

lol determined to have last place!  a few people showed interest so I just threw out the suggestion, that way you can bench all your computers here not just the latest generation stuff. It's fun to sometimes go back and take a look at what once was and it's not that much extra work for me.

Oh its on now!  I've got a 939 rig sitting here that sadly will probably beat your T4300 even at those low clock speeds for a Core 2 Duo.  However my Athlon XP build probably won't.  I'll have it going hopefully next week.  Going to edit this post here in a few minutes with my x6 Thuban to see how it compares to the FX because why not.  But once I get my Opteron 185 in the mail or get my second 939 rig build, I'll see how they do compared with your T4300.  If I beat it, I've still got something slower up my sleeve.  Mwahahaha! :naughty_devil2:

Looks like, at least on the CPUz bench test, the Thuban CPU's absolutely were slower than the FX.  Wonder how the original Phenom does now..... 🤔

Nice man. That is a large cooling area for sure. Perhaps with my next rig build I may have to consider these overly large RADS to fix externally to my case for MAXIMUM POWAH!

Tx...with all the latest CPUs and GPUs having boost algorithms w/ temp as one of the major constraints, with big cooling, it's like taking candy from a baby.😳  With good QDs such as those OD4s from Koolance, you also get way more options to arrange builds, apart from keeping additional heat out of the 'cases'. I actually save space this way while getting great, near-silent cooling at my work and entertainment stations.

 

In a decade or so with custom cooling, I've built up a nice pantry of rads and pumps I re-use (after thorough cleaning)....for the dual-mobo Raven_A, less than half of the w-cooling peripherals were new. Needless to add that it's not just about length of a rad, but also how many cores it has and what materials are used...in the upper pic below, the smaller rad is an aluminum 360 single core rad from a Corsair 360 150i pro - actually a decent AIO - but the rad next to it is a triple core copper/brass 480x64 > far, far higher performance and very little 'noise'. The other custom 360s in the lower pic are XSPC RX 360x60s dual core copper/brass, my standard go-to rads for almost a decade.

 

MoRas would also be nice, but I prefer the divisibility of my w-cooling setup re. mixing, matching and redeploying cooling peripherals for different systems.

On paper I think they appeared to be a little bit quicker. But as you know, when you crank that Phenom II IMC to 3000 with low CL 1600 memory the system gets really snappy, more so than anything you can do with an FX chip, which can only go about 2600MHz reliably on air. But I'm with you bro. Go oldschool or go home! I had an AMD Phenom II 970, OEM Zosma core. Which actually comes with two disabled cores. Great cost/performance ratio, especially if you can successfully unlock both disabled cores. That turns it into AMDs fastest base clock hexacore of the entire lineup (iirc 1100T has 3.4 base and 3.7 boost...)

Anyway, I'm rambling but in all seriousness the Phenom II is my favorite processor by far.

What is that open air chassis in "Wraith's" rig picture? I love it. Like a supersized OBT. I may have to get one. 

 

Also, brilliant use of drain valves as QDC's. I never thought of that.

I have attached a photo that shows more clearly how the valve and fitting are connected. I use Koolance QD3 fittings. They are made well and look nice, but the female half is famous for sticking open when you disconnect the line. To solve that problem, I install a ball valve next to the female QDC fitting and turn the valve off before unplugging the fittings. So, if it sticks open, there is maybe a teaspoon of liquid that leaks and that is easily handled by a couple of paper towels or a terrycloth hand towel.

I have never had that happen to me and I own a substantial amount of Koolance QDC's. I usually just wrap a few pieces of paper towels around them when I pull. Thanks for the warning. @J7SC_Orionhave you ever had QDC's fail?

I have about 10 QD3 fittings, 6 on the Wraith setup, and the female half sticks on all of them. What is weird is I also use QD2 fittings. I have them on Banshee and have used them on other systems. I have never once had a QD2 fitting stick open on me. Only the QD3. It is odd because they seem to be made the same, only the QD2 fittings are smaller. All of the QD3 fittings are black, so it may be the enamel or anodized finish causing it. The black finish is on the inside as well as the outside. The QD2 fittings are chrome.

I have a few that stick open and one with a slow drip, which is why I currently don't have any on the main bench.   Using CPC QDC's on my main machine and on the testing bench, and they have performed flawlessly.

That is really disenhertning to hear. How old are they?

All of my QD3s are 4 years old or older.  I wouldn't worry too much about my recent experience.  I used to run a bunch of the QD3s without issue, and I sold all of my other ones when I was getting rid of a bunch of unused fittings a few years back.

 

While I'm here, here's a run of the CPU-Z bench in Linux via wine.  Multi-thread bench is a little bugged with CPU usage topped out at 68%.

Good thing you folks brought that up - it solved a mystery for me 😊...

 

I use the QD4s, and I recently had one of the female ends' valve stuck open (still is, per pic below). Said QD was from ~2013 but had always worked great, like all the other Koolance QDs I have. In its defense, I opened it all up because I noticed that that particular loop's liquid was getting 'milky' in the reservoir for a Threadripper CPU loop - upon further inspection and taking everything apart, the micro-fin plate inside the nickel-copper Heatkiller IV Pro had started to lose its nickel plating (!😡!) and particulates had built up right where the QD4 in question was connected to the tubing. Likely, the nickel particulates that floated in the loop at least contributed to the QD4 getting stuck...

 

As to the mystery, I couldn't find the relevant o-ring...I had lost one once before so no spares and I looked everywhere, including inside the QD...but it wasn't until I used the stronger camera flash just now that I found the o-ring > stuck inside & hiding...🤣

 

I also have a pile (16+) of Swiftech QDs for almost a decade now...never had one of those stuck open, but they're much less substantial and ALWAYS leak when opened up in a filled loop. For now at least, Koolance QDs are still my go-to...

I had some Koolance quick-disconnects from maybe 2011-2012. For the most part they worked alright, but over time they would allow a little too much water out when disconnecting. I don't remember what model specifically, but were probably QD2's of some sort.
