Edit: For those who have dealt with condensation, is it okay to leave the CPU socket alone (LGA 1151) or do I have to worry about the under-side of the CPU as well?

 

 

Underside of the CPU ? You mean the CPU itself, or the back of the socket ? 

 

When I did sub-zero HWBot, I filled the CPU socket itself with Vaseline, followed by a blast with a heat-gun (w/ enough distance) to have the Vaseline flow evenly throughout the socket, ie. LG2011. Typically that was for either DICE or LN2 though. The back of the mobo - including the back of the CPU socket - would get a full layer of LET / liquid electrical tape, ditto for the back of the RAM slots and VRMs.

 

Now, if you don't plan to go much lower than say - 30 C or so and only do shorter runs, you can probably get away with less. I also used a phase cooler (-50C or so) for lighter runs, and for that did not do the LET on the back.

 

Do you have a sheet of Neoprene you can put / snug underneath the mobo ? There shouldn't be any airflow (and thus humidity) getting underneath. Keep in mind that some mobos have a through-hole of the pcb to allow for temp probe sensors to be stuck through; if you're not using a temp probe, than cover it from the back.

I will fix tomorrow, the problem is only have one monitor right now so I have to shuffle things around alot and sometimes things get missed. Used to doing this on 2 or 4 monitors. 

 

Anyway, when I go back downstairs in the morning, I will put it on the leaderboard.

60 plate heat exchanger that is immersed in the 5 gallon bucket, with only the hot side connected (to my custom loop) the cold side is open and passive. Meaning I am not pumping any liquid through the cold side of the plate heat exchanger, it's simply dropped in the bucket and immersed from all sides with cold water. This seems to be sufficient enough for now, especially on nights like tonight, where the temp is 0F. 

 

approx 6ft of clear tubing that runs out the window which attach the liquid to liquid heat exchanger in the bucket to my custom loop. 

In terms of the top of the motherboard, in the vrm/near CPU area, can I blast that with some liquid electrical tape to prevent condensation? People are telling me to use eraser putty or something like that. But if I can do it with LET I will. 

 

PC has been off for an hour. Going to see if I can improve on my 680 single core score a little bit now that the liquid in the bucket is about 0F.

I've used both eraser putty and LET - eraser putty works but I prefer LET because it is better at getting into all the little small spaces, especially w/o applying force (think tiny SMT caps)...it is also surprisingly easy to remove. Then again, for certain areas where things are flanged to the board such as the socket retention area, I used both. 

 

I take it your system itself is not in a 0F environment, but in a warmer spot (relatively speaking). The higher the differential between cooling medium and system ambient, the more you have to insulate, with humidity / dew point also added in.

@Storm-Chaser ...part deux 🙂  ...just snapped a few quick pics of an old Rampage Extreme Black Series / X79 I used for sub-zero. Remember, it has been collecting dust for years, so it ain't pretty...

 

On the front, you still see some of the Vaseline in the socket even after several rounds of cleaning. The grey stuff is the eraser putty (not thermal paste). I used that around sturdier 'elevated' components such as around the CPU bracket assembly, also as there was additional insulation above with a final layer of LET on top of that (not shown as the CPU was removed). Especially with DiCE where you use acetone to draw down the cold to the bottom of the pot, there will be a lot of droplets flying out and acetone likes to eat some types of plastic, also best to wear goggles with DICE / acetone as opposed to LN2.

 

On the right, you see the back of the mobo with the LET applied everywhere. And around the metal retaining bracket (elevated) for the CPU, I also used eraser putty again on top of the LET - and on top of that was another layer of LET (now 'off' as I took the back retention mechanism off). Insulating the back of the RAM is important, unless you can ensure 'no air' and have it all sitting on a thicker, softer piece of neoprene. BTW, if there's a diving equipment shop near you, they typically sell neoprene in big sheets or a roll as well.

I tried to get my 5600X to clock up a bit higher but 4.7GHz all core seems to be the limit on my chip. That's ok though, more chips will come out 🤣

Coldest night of the winter so far.. I have the chiller linked up to my custom loop. Hoping to pass this benchmark at 5722MHz, or at least that's the goal for tonight. 

You can see my temps are ideal for benching ATM.

Yeah I'm not going to submit that (my laptop) result, or it wont be scored anyway. 

Just messing around getting my kicks in. And I agree, underclocking should not be allowed because we want to measure performance accurately, so we have a good reference as to how obsolete platforms perform relative to new technology.

Your advice actually helps me out quite a bit, thanks for that. I will eventually be moving that way (subzero), I definitely have that itch, especially since this chiller thing has really been hella fun to play around with and also given me pretty good results to boot.

It took a few times reading this thread for the light bulb to turn on, but this post gave me the motivation to put a dinosaur I've been meaning to put on eBay through a benchmark test first before I finally list the damn thing. First, I need to see if I can power it on...stay tuned later this week.

*Should have said measure performance in a consistent manor between SLO-MO rigs as well so it's at least it is some semblance of a viable competition. Sorry I was rambling there.

Closed the heat vents, Opened the windows, shut the door to keep the rest of the house warm, and blew a fan from the windows to my 1080mm radiator for a few hours this morning to get the water nice and COLD. Cold for my city is 45C outside, but hey at least it's not 86F like last week.

 

Cold water helped a lot, and didn't even need as much voltage, but hit the silicon wall at 4462MHz. Single: 515. Multi: 4098. The validator says my 1600 beat the 3600X so I'm happy enough with that. This is the best 1600AF sample I have messed around with. I got a free 2700X from my nephew so I'll be changing out parts soon to play around with that.

...🙂  just remember it's a slippery slope, and serious sub-zero like LN2 can eat up a lot of your time and budget - but it can also be a ton of fun. BTW, keep PS2 mice and keyboards around, even if they aren't pretty. Typically, when going below a certain subzero threshold, your USB will get wonky, or stop altogether. Also, get yourself a bootable SSD with a stripped'n slimmed bench OS if you haven't already done so. Have fun !

You know, I wouldn't mind seeing a comparison of how my old Athlon Thunderbird would have done. I had a 1.33 GHz chip overclocked to 1.46 GHz though.

 

When the numbers are in single digits already, I'm not sure how meaningful the results from older CPUs will be unless CPU-Z has precision down to more decimal places if the value is low enough. We'll find out it we can get a CPU that will register <1.0 on the benchmark.

Wow this is all great content for the old school rig leaderboard. Keep em coming guys!

 

I really would run my Lenovo T61p w/ core 2 extreme processor X9000, considering it will do 4.2Ghz validations I'm betting I could get a run in at 4GHz @ 1.450v  if I let it sit outside for a couple hours. 

 

However, the mobo needs to be replaced before I can do that 😜

I will update the slo mo board at some point this evening, but here is the main competition leaderboard with a couple updated scores.

Interesting how your single core dropped a bit, even though you are clocking substantially higher than stock. 

Is this because in stock form the chip has higher single core turbo vs what you can achieve when overclocking ALL your cores (2nd run) at the same time?
