Strix G15 Advantage edition Dead after 1 days?

bonami2

Recommended Posts

Wondering if many people had experience with gaming laptop dying?

My first dell had a bad motherboard from purchase and would freeze after 3+ h of gaming. Was rmaed and work fine now

And now just got myself a brand new Asus Strix G15 Adavantage Edition and the thing ran great! Then i ran folding@home on the gpu only for stability.

16h later black screen keyboard rgb on. Restart laptop and nothing rgb and fan work but hdmi output and screen show nothing.

Gonna return it tomorrow and try to get another one...

Are laptop that crappy these days?

I think it is not so much a question of the quality of the components, but the lack of cooling ability for them.

Folding@Home on a laptop can get real toasty really quickly. While it may not be as hot as running Prime95, the thing I find to look out for on laptops is the sustained heat. Heat spikes or short times of running really hot is usually fine, and anyone would reasonably expect that to be. Leaving it to run intensely over a prolonged period of time IMHO is punishment for a laptop as there is diminished cooling ability.

I could be wrong, it may also be poor components related to power delivery. With extensive loads comes increased power requirements which may have been too much for something inside the laptop, maybe even the power brick ?

In an ideal world, we could run F@H and other similar programs on all laptops fine, but I think some of them out there are simply not built for the task, I mean technically none of them are by design.

I think E has a good point.  I'll use my own laptop as an example here......

I have an Acer with a 2500u in it.  From the factory, letting it throttle the APU down to just a measely 15w, the thing reaches about 82*C when stress testing it.  If I overclock it to over 100w TDP, I've seen it hit 110*C near immediately (before I shut it off).  I had to install the cooler off the Nitro laptop in there, and solder the secondary fan to a "Yeet Mode" switch off the USB header when I ran the thing overclocked.  Doing so causes both fans to spin up to 100% fan speed.....at auto its just one fan on quiet settings.  Using my "Yeet Mode" fan profile and liquid metal on the cooler I dropped full load overclocked temps down to about 72*C.  Now the problem became the battery, apparently it can't handle sustained 145w loads. -_-

It's a cooling problem mate. 👍

Temp seemed fine. My dell g3 with 1050ti as being folding at 80c-90c for the past 3 month ahah.

Upgraded the psu from 130w to a 240w since the battery was dropping on heavy use.

Had a desktop motherboard hit 145 celcius on the vrm and a gpu that hit 150c and both of those lasted year after those high temp.

And miner are using laptop these days too.

They refunded me the laptop they got none in stock at Canada Computer and they think the cpu died.

Asus using liquid metal with those laptop and that cause many laptop to die.

If the laptop died running furmark i would understand but fah for one days? Some of my game in 4k and or vr use more power than f@h.

Now am out of computer 😆 need to reinstall windows on my g3 and figure out what am gonna do 😪

Doesn't really matter how you cut it mate, 90*C is too hot.  VRM's at 90*C is usually the absolute upper end and VRM's are perfectly fine to run hot.  CPU cores and GPU cores, that's way too hot.  Laptops just lack the cooling capabilities to run sustained loads like that.  When you're gaming, you can always enable vsync or a framerate cap to lower temps.  Folding and other full loads there's nothing you can do except increase cooling.

Yes....things CAN run that hot.  Yes, VRM's CAN run hotter than even 90*C.  It's just not good for them, as you're seeing with the dead laptops.

Only time heat kill component in short lifespan. Was back when moron where overclocking fx cpu on msi motherboard without vrm probe. They would catch fire.

Or amd cpu overheating.

Had a gts 250 with vrm in the 130+ celsius folding for like 5 month straight.

And my 7950/7970 r9 290 where all at 100-120c.

High end Motherboard solid cap are rated 12k hour at 105c. I wonder how are laptop component rated?

Am mostly worried about the liquid metal.

That true but that asus is thicker than average gaming laptop.

Those razer and msi slim edition are garbage somewhat but they are heavilly tdp throttled so reliability is not an issue that much.

I miss those big alienware and msi.

Now only clevo is selling big laptop but they are 3k+

Wonder if i should just build a desktop again 😔

Thank you everyone for the advice.

I'm not very familiar with Asus laptops, but I can say that in 2020 when I was laptop shopping, their TUF 15 Gaming A15 and Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 4000 laptops were space heaters with poor cooling and ventilation. The TUF 15 Gaming chassis was so badly designed that some people took to cutting their own exhaust vents in the bottom panel because some of the vents were blocked off from the factory. Asus made some excuse about them being blocked off to better distribute the heat, but users reported less CPU/GPU throttling and lower temperatures across all the thermal sensors with their DIY chassis mods.

I don't think very highly of Asus when it comes to laptops these days. I'm currently a fan of Tongfang chassis resellers (Eluktronics in US, XMG.gg in EU). but I don't know if any of the resellers are native to Canada.

Yeah, back in the day when they still had  socketed CPUs and MXM GPUs Alienware and MSI had some decent high performance notebooks. Alienware hasn't released anything worth buying since the M18xR2.

Unfortunately, now even Clevo is selling only the chintzy soldered trash. The X170 was the last of the Mohicans and it is discontinued.

I would definitely recommend building a desktop instead. Unless you are traveling all of the time and seldom home to use it, going ultra-inexpensive on a laptop and going wild on a desktop is a much smarter way to go. I abandoned laptops in 2015 and I have never regretted it for a moment. If you do travel a lot and are not home enough to use a desktop, there is really nothing impressive left to choose from that is available in notebooks at any price point.

I seldom use the junkbook in my signature, but it is inexpensive and I don't expect much from it. It works OK if I have to go on a business trip. Better than trying to use a smartphone or tablet.

That is what I have. It's certainly nothing spectacular or impressive, but the pricing offers better bang for buck and build quality is better than some of the more expensive brands and models. There is really no point in spending more when you get nothing in return for the extra cost. They are all disposable, run hot and leave much to be desired.

For me, it bridges the gap from 2020 until whenever I choose to build a new machine again, hopefully later this year or early next. I got it because it's lightweight which will be a welcome change for traveling, whenever that will be, after using a heavyweight Lenovo ThinkPad W520 on trips since 2013. It just so happens that the Eluktronics is the fastest machine in my house right now and it's good for a fairly inexpensive gaming laptop, but I mostly just park it on my kitchen table. I've still yet to play any games on it since buying it.

Yea mxm the area 51m was the future dell said 😆then they killed it and mxm died at the same time.

Building a desktop with a 5800x or 12700k is more expensive with a 3060ti than the laptop

.

And i may start traveling alot for work that why i was looking for a laptop.

in my honest opinion, i would never even think of using laptops for folding, or any really intensive workloads. hell. mine has a hard enough time running VMs for my schoolwork. my home desktop though like you mentioned wanting to build. is an overbuilt powerhouse in every way except GPU, because i refuse to pay current prices for one.

FAH appreciates all of the contributions, but they just aren't made to sustain the heat. I folded a Laptop once upon a time for several months, but I cut the bottom and added intake fans. Laptop never died. I ripped a newer hp apart, and there was nearly no airspace inside at all.

I wanted to fold for stability and see if it has any defect.

My dell g3 had a cracked gpu die from factory and would run for hour stable and end up freezing. The only ways i knew was running fah to test.

Ran the laptop for a years like that before rmaing and got a new motherboard working stable.

I would not fold with a high tdp laptop at full clock for sure like half clock or half TDP for safety.

Just saw that i can get 2 years warantly free from buying from a reseller here. Maybe will get another one to see.  Should die before 2 years and get rmaed if it badly designed haha.

Or i will make a micro atx z690 / 12700k-12900k build but wonder how am gonna fit a nhd15 and a 3070-6800 in that space.

Update: Just ordered another one. Me and spending my g3 not cutting it.

I just remembered that when i launched folding@home it ran on both igp and gpu and cpu maybe i bricked the bios because those laptop use the igp to display since they don't have a mux switch.

Or maybe the power brick died like entreprise said. Could not test that out back then.

Il report back if i kill it again 😆🤣😂
