Just a quick one guys. 

 

I have been running my 3800X with PBO using the EDC bug for a while now with a 101Mhz bclk. Nothing too wild. But that extra MHz meant that I was getting almost an additional 50MHz at single core boost speeds. That meant a single core boost of 4696.5MHz. Which I know wont differ much from 4650Mhz but you know how it is.... bigger number is better number. Even if it only makes you FEEL better.

 

Anyway I added another sata drive to my rig recently. So now I am at 5 SATA drives + 1nvme total. A 128GB SSD that I migrated all of my "user" folders to. And my rig wont see the drive at 101MHz. Surely 101Mhz should be within margin of tolerance? I don't expect to run 105MHz BCLK nor do I want to as I imagine I might run  into serious stability concerns at all core boost frequencies. But surely I can run my standard 101MHz without my SATA devices dropping out?

Also. Is there a way I can try increasing BCLK through software? Ryzen Master doesnt seem to have the option. The slider is there but greyed out in EasyTuner. Because if I can't boot at 101 I want to at least see what difficulties if any at all I might have by setting 101 once I am logged in.

this sounds more like a specific drive issue than a 1mhz oc issue, i bumped mine up 1mhz to test your theory and i lost no drive, not nvme or sata

I occasionally drop one of my HDD's as well. But that is only with this drive connected. Otherwise all works fine. If I just use my other 4 sata drives everything is peachy. I put the SSD in question into an external enclosure and it picks it up just fine. But I can't boot off of it. (I have dual boot windows 10 so when I stress test and bench OC's I don't bugger up my main OS with one too many BSOD's)

yeah that definently sounds like some kind of drive issue. it sounds almost as if that drive's controller doesnt like the SATA/PCIe controller on your board

 

EDIT: you could try driver/chipset updates and see if that fixes it

reset to stock, run xmp on ram, boot with all your drives, if they all come up it was the OC, if its still dropping i only have 2 possible ideas left

 

either your SATA controller/chipset needs driver updates (which is very unlikely but ive seen it before)

or you're using a faulty SATA cable. (yes it may look fine but it could be shorting internally)

reset cmos. running xmp at 100mhz. All fine. on f32 system wont post at 101. Just tested again. Back up bios still on F12. That will boot at 101. But that 128GB drive just wont budge. Wont show up in BIOS at 101. But I have been running 101 for some while now on F12 with 4 SATA devices connected. I dont think the SATA drivers kick in until boot so I am not sure if updating chipset drivers will help much.

yup everything works fine at stock clocks. 

 

So then the next question. Is there any software to tweak bclk from within windows? I tried Ryzen master there is nothing there that I have seen. EasyTune has the slider but it is greyed out. I can't do anything. setfsb hasn't been updated in yonkers.

youll laugh when i sat it but, ryzen likes multiplier more than it likes FSB adjustments

Oh I know. But I am not multi OC'ing. I am trying to stretch what I can get with PBO. 

 

So I use the EDC bug. 

Which at 100mhz baseclock on my 3800x nets me 4.65 max boost and around 44-4.5 all core. 

 

That extra mhz brings my max up to nearly 4.7ghz and around 4450-4550 all core. And while I am sure I can chase the all core clocks with little difficulty I still want the single core boosts. Which is why I threw a PINCH of BCLK in there. I did not try higher than 101 as I don't think I have the all core headroom as those frequencies are pretty much what I managed with a manual OC anyway

you may chucke when i say this but, 50mhz today is about as useful as 33mhz was on a 200mhz pentium 2. it literally did nothing. was just numbers XD im just happy we figured your system out without any major damage happening

Of those 5 SATA devices, how many are running directly of the chipset?  I want to think on many of my older platforms, I could only run 4 devices off the chipset and the other two were always a different color plug that ASUS had hooked up to an "add-on" controller of some sort.  This was all team blue though.

mostly all of the AMD side boards ive seen run the same controller for all ports, unless the board goes over the requesite 6 ports i believe most newer controllers can take

I had the same line of thought you did. I think 4 of the drives run on the chipset. If I remember CORRECTLY.

the bios on my B550 says all 6 ports run off the same controller. x570 shouldnt be much different, im supposed to be on the "cut back" board lol

Playing devils advocate, but why would a software tweak for base clock make a difference if the BIOS adjustment doesn't work ? I could be missing a point.

he keeps putting too much effort for 50mhz.

software tweaks cause many other problems. features are disabled in them for a reason. so you dont break anything
