Always had that issue with all my amd gpu 7950 r9 290 rx 480.  The fan are always at like 700-1200 rpm till the gpu run at 80c+ And memory run at 80c

Anyone know if there any software that can cause this? I know in the past hwinfo64 was doing it was crashing the gpu to 2d clock on my 7950 and caused fan speed bug.

Am kinda exhausted of amd driver/hardware team and i think am gonna sell and go back to nvidia. Gave them enough chance to do something.

Am i the only one on earth with those issue ? 😆

Are you saying the fans are too loud or the GPU is too hot?

Haven't had any issue like this with my RX 6800

80c is pretty normal for a GPU. Mine runs at ~85c

No i mean the fan stay at 850/900 rpm while the vram junction is at 85c and core 80/83c

I ran DDU reinstalled driver and it was running higher speed but after 2/3 new driver it went back to this.

And manual fan control on afterburner or amd never work reliably for me when ran 24/7

I think am gonna order a 3080ti will be worthwhile for folding. Gonna resell the gpu it still has like 8 month warantly.

Not sure. Gonna lose like 1k

Just exhausted of this. Last work unit i had 800k ppd. 😆

Hmm interesting. My fan behavior for my GPU has been consistent from one driver version to the next as far as I can tell. Perhaps you should try a clean install of windows? Are you on 10 or 11?

Maybe even do an RMA with AMD.

I use the "manual" fan control in the AMD driver suite.  It ONLY fails to work on me if my card has crashed for whatever reason (usually the driver that crashes actually).  A reboot and resetting the fan controls fixes it for me.  During mining or folding, I haven't had any problems using the fan controls.  If yours KEEPS resetting on you, you've got an unstable card and its time to RMA it would be my opinion.  AMD drivers have come a long, long, LONG way since the 7950.

I ran ddu and had 2 windows install one of 10 and one of 11.  I had that problem with all amd card i owned. Maybe my game are hard on the driver or something. I just play Beam Ng and run folding@home mostly these days.

I had a reset in the event log from the asus software that control my rgb ram so i uninstalled it that maybe my first issue with setting reseting.  Make sense did think it was strange that it was always back to default.

Currently folding at 1m ppd. At 2200mhz 180w

Ran occt error scan for like 20 minute and 3d mark in loop for 12h and unigine for like 8 hour without any issue.

The gpu seem stable so am kinda lost. 😔

Installed amd pro driver to test out. Fan rpm start a 1100 at 50c then at 65+ it 850. No idea who programmed that but he failed.

Except that the custom fan profile work and i gained 100k ppd so 1.1m 😬

Average ppd are supposed to be 2.8m if i look at online stat 😑

Everything running good now it seem. Manual setting seem to hold 2k rpm and gpu core 53c and memory junction at 57c  room temp 20c Average 95% usage 1.7m ppd

Put it for sale gonna see if i get good offer. But i may keep it. New gen coming anyways.

folding is based on what work units you pull. that average number you see is just that. an average. you can be either above or below that target by a large margin.

i do wonder if you DDU erased your old drivers in safe mode, before installing new ones and the new card. especially if an nvidia driver has been on the system recently.

Never had nvidia driver on that build But did not run DDU in safe mode. I did DDU like 4 time tho.

But i don't know the cooling issue is maybe just the bios i don't really know if it driver or bios. Just does't make sense that it run 1100rpm at 50c but slow down when it get hotter. 🤯

And for folding am just angry because crappy linux driver seem to do 4m ppd average. Meanwhile windows 11 is like 1.5-2.0 average for me.  😟

Am not good enough with linux to figure out how to make the rx work with the driver. Did a dual boot to try it but gave up haha.

For now am gonna stick to it. My fan setting resetting was probably my damn asus software crashing the pc i just never noticed if it restarted. Gonna keep a look at the Event Log in the future days.

When the AMD Driver hangs / crashes, you end up with low speed fans and throttling high temps.  I've seen this happen on my RX 580's, on my 5700XT, and on my 6900XT.  If your driver is crashing, there's something wrong.  You're either unstable where you're at, or the card is borked in some way and needs to be RMA'd.  It's also possible that its just simply boosting too high to be stable while folding too.  You might need to turn it down to say ~90% of its "stock" boost clocks instead of letting it go full ham.

Don't forget, Nvidia and AMD both do actively try to stop people from distributing computing projects (hence the hashrate limiter on 3000 series Nvidia).  AMD does it their own way, by making certain loads unstable but yet gaming you're perfectly fine.  Take my 6900XT as an example.  I can game on it all night overclocked.  I turn on F@H or mining on it, and I absolutely HAVE to turn it down a notch otherwise my drivers crash just like yours.

Make sense maybe that the issue. I ran it on the Rage mode when i received it and had issue. Was just thinking it was driver so i stopped using that setting in the amd driver. It increase boost speed a little it an AMD feature.

Always ran it at stock after and had mostly no issue except some random reboot that i never knew what it was exactly because it could go week 24/7 and cpu is stock and 100% stable. Except the asus software that in the event log it says it caused a reboot so i just uninstalled it before making this post.

Still got 8-9 month of warrantly.

Gonna turn Rage on to see if it crash or something. With the Pro driver i know it the most stable driver so if anything happen it dead.

F@H do not report failed workunit in the log so that why i wonder how it could be unstable 😐

Somebody much smarter than I will have to answer that one. :lachen:

Modern tech is definitely different than what I'm used to, and probably you as well to be honest.  I noticed on my 5800x, instability wasn't crashing.  Nope, not once.  But it does result in lower bench scores, and lower framerates in games.  I think there's active error correction going on these days to prevent crashing entirely.  But I could be wrong.

It exhausting sometime. Vram as correction i think so it can be unstable and run fine for a long time. That what i think happen with that gpu. If i can run a custom fan speed i never have any issue. But stock for some reason vram run at 90c + Because the fan spin a 850 rpm at full load 🤯

Rage mode now 800 rpm 76 core temp and 90c vram junction like My fan going backward :wheee:

That damn thing want to die by itself.

Gonna run custom fan and see

no problem dude, also, check if the card is dual bios, if it is it may be on "silent mode" on the switch by default. if it is that could explain the fan aswell

Another possibility is to update the VBIOS, or swap out the VBIOS to another compatible one. ? Perhaps that is the issue. I know just how different fan profiles can be across different cards. But check to see if there was an actual VBIOS update your YOUR card first as one may have been released addressing a fan bug.

no problem dude, also, check if the card is dual bios, if it is it may be on "silent mode" on the switch by default. if it is that could explain the fan aswell

Yea tried this at first and it did seem to help but for some reason it went back to this.  Il check it again maybe i switched it by accident or something.

I searched but never found anything it a sapphire Pulse oc.

Swapping it could be an idea but if i can run custom fan and it stay for 24/7 that would be less risky.

When i get back home i will try to see what i can do.

I always had this issue with my amd gpu for some reason. I wonder if corsair or logitech software may be the cause.

Tried studio and latest driver. And the fan never go over 1000 rpm at high temp for some reason. Even tried all those setting in white here.  Just manual work. Gonna try uninstalling some software.

It is not impossible for their to be conflicts but this would usually only affect the reading of the sensor in Windows. Assuming fan speed is left to Auto, the VBIOS will handle it, meaning that it would bypass any potential software conflicts. Have you tried this GPU in another system/vanilla Windows installation ?

If you have issues on Auto in a different rig or vanilla OS install, I could only assume a bugged VBIOS, or the VBIOS has a really poor fan curve setup.

I could try it again with my fx setup just need to install win11 and the cooler.

Will try this todays or fridays.

I had that kind of issue with my 7950 and hwinfo64. It was crashing the bios to 2d clock if ran for long and i think fan was getting stuck.

And 3dmark would not switch to 3d clock when running too because the video in the app would bug out or something. Closing the app was fixing the issue while hwinfo64 needed a reboot..

For some reason i always get strange bug with amd. Never knew why because i like the company more than nvidia.

At least now it being folding for 3 days straight with the fan setting set.

My computer reboot seemed to be caused by one of the asus software so maybe the fan curve is alright and it mean to be quiet at 1k rpm.

@pioneerisloud

Forget your comment about folding being unstable that make sense. That why ppd lower than on linux.

What your rpm under load?

What your rpm under load?

With a full f@h load on it right now, I'm doing 206w, 58*C, and 2900-3k RPM.  On my 6900XT MSI card.  Using AIDA64 to monitor.  Stock everything in drivers except a custom fan profile (and game stuff but that doesn't affect stability).

I mean stock setting so it spin up or try to cook itself like mine. Maybe they are setup to be quiet.
