You know how on PAWN stars and storage wars when they buy or want to buy things they don't know about and they say "I know a guy" to bring in and look at items? Yea, apparently I've become that guy. Walked into work this morning and a co-worker who had been playing around with bidding on storage lockers brought by a GPU and a few HDDs to be evaluated. He wanted to know if they worked, value and if there were any cool games on the HDDs.

You are looking at 2x80 GB WD drives and a 1GB HD5770. I eyeballed it when he brought it in and told him $30. I had been looking at these cards on ebay recently and one in really good condition (Which you can see this one isn't) are going for $30-40. Hardly worth the time it would take to restore it, but hey I love restoring old tech. I think he's more interested on what is on the drives. The one you can't see has Win 8 in permanent marker written on it. I'll probably ask him to keep the card and slap the drives on my LGA 775 bench to see what they hold.

There is visible rust on the aluminum components which leads me to believe the stuff had been sitting in the storage lockers for quite a long time in high humidity. I'll probably soak the heatsink and PCB in a 91% iso bath for 24 hours. Also an extension cord for the datavac will come in handy, don't want to pressure clean that stanky stuff indoors.

Nothing wrong with being "that" guy. 🙂

That's a pretty neat find.  Not sure I'd say valuable, but definitely a neat score.  You don't see a 5770 every day anymore.  Those 80GB HDD's could prove to be useful if someone was wanting to build an old rig too, since older OS's had a lower HDD limit.  I think 98 only works on upwards of 128GB HDD's or smaller I believe it was?  Assuming the drives work of course.

I have to admit, even though I most definitely don't want a 5770.....the artwork they used to put on GPU's back in those days was phenomenal and I really miss our cute gamer girls and epic warriors printed on our GPU's.

I have two 5770's if you are still looking at them 😉. Way cleaner than that one.

I had that Sapphire 5770! Well, actually I had three of them in succession since they all worked for about a month followed by them displaying only a green screen. When the third one died, the 6770 was already out so Sapphire sent me the newer model.

Unfortunately the card has no display out. I spent about 2 hours on it last night. I think it suffered for too long in that storage locker. Its ashame too because I fully restored the damn thing. I may play with it later, trying different display outs however its not recognized in GPUz or control panel so...

Did that 5770 come out of a smoker's house?

I have a Sapphire and XFX 5770, but both have the reference blower coolers. The Sapphire is a reference board, but the XFX while looking like one, definitely is not on closer look.

i had a pair of 5770s both were actually XFX reference cards, the only way to tell is by the last 4 letters of the model number on the sticker

ZNFA or ZNF1 is the reference board as is from AMD no changes

ZNFB is revision B but will still fit reference waterblocks, revision C will not

ZNFC is revision C of the xfx reference board where they cheapened it and re-arranged the layout

Yeah I think I ended up with the cheapened one. I didn't know any better back then. It's PCB has noticeably fewer components on the backplate vs the reference.

Daaaaaaaang man, I gotta get me a spare toothbrush now.  That cleaning job you did on that card, just WOW!  Night and day difference.  Wanna clean some of my gear up for me?  :lachen:

Too bad the card doesn't work though.  Have you considered giving it a bake?  Sometimes that can bring a card back to life, as I'm sure you already know.  If you're not all that worried about it, then I'm not either.  A 5770 really only probably holds sentimental value these days anyway, it never really was anything THAT special when it was released.  Good card, but yeah.

Thanks Pio! Sometimes I think I enjoy cleaning it more than the actual tech 🙂 I had not considered baking it, though I have baked a 970 before. Will think on it, this weekend will be a perfect time for it as the wife is out of town.

Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is a 30L ultrasonic cleaning tub.

I just don't like working on petri dishes. That included people's nasty laptops, but also people's keyboards back when I worked desktop and the keyboards in question perfectly qualified as biohazardous waste.

Funny, when I moved out of desktop, I suddenly stopped getting sick so often lol.

thats because " people" seem to consume any type of food they can around a keyboard, that lands between keys and festers
