5950x for new build or wait?

I apologize for the "should I wait?" post. I haven't had a desktop PC for a while here and I want to build a high end PC for gaming, tinkering and everything inbetween. I recently started looking at hardware again and I believe AM4 is pretty much dead, as far as new CPU's so any advice? Should I wait for next generation? Should I consider Intel? I appreciate any opinions, advice or criticism.

AM4 is EOL, yes. Personally I would wait unless you NEED it now. New offerings from AMD set to drop this year anyway. DDR5 is already starting to come down in price and we should start to see 4 series offerings from NVIDIA by Q3 of this year.

If it's purely for gaming, it would be hard for me not to recommend Alder Lake right now if you were to pull the trigger tomorrow.

Yeah AM4 is dead. I guess really would want to know what your use case is? Gaming only, or have some other uses in mind?

If you really need it now, definitely want to know your use case. If not in a rush, wait for Zen 4 and Raptor Lake and go from there depending on which meets your needs.

This is a toughy.  If you play the waiting game, there's ALWAYS a better thing coming out in 6 months to a year.  At the same time, yes AM4 is pretty much dead at the moment.

I just bought a 5800x and 6900xt like 2 weeks ago.  I don't regret it at all.  Okay, I lie.  I regret the GPU, but not the CPU / motherboard.  Had I known another week I could've bought a 6950XT, I'd have waited one week.

Thanks for the replies.

1. I'm not saying I have an "unlimited" budget per say, but I want hardware that will get done what I need without a lot of compromises.

2. I have many use cases, along with gaming, I like to play around with unreal engine, I plan on doing some video editing also.

3. Time isn't of importance, my thought is if I'm not really gaining significant performance I can buy at EOL for less $$$ possibly.

4. I do not have a preference, I am more concerned with performance and reliability.

5. I don't think with the type of PC I plan on building that power consumption is a significant factor.

6. I love to overclock, if I can have a stable clock and get everything done while doing it, It will happen.

Well if you are looking more for deals and don't have to be on the latest and greatest, then yeah both 12th gen and Zen 3 parts should be found at pretty good prices these days. I haven't been tracking 12th gen pricing, but do recall the CPUs as being competitive, and Zen 3 can be had well below MSRP. The cost with 12th gen will be the new motherboard and DDR5...which will also be true with Zen 4 / AM5 when it launches.

GPUs on the other hand are only now starting to hit their MSRPs...almost 2 years after they launched with rumors of the new ones as early as this summer or into September. So up to you there.
