AMD: Moore's Law "whole lot more expensive"

Speaking at a summit in Las Vegas, Papermaster explained that Moore's Law is still on track, but chip technologies are becoming ever more complex.

"And you've all heard many times Moore's Law is slowing down. Moore's Law is dead," Papermaster says. But according to AMD's tech guru, that's not actually true.

"It's not that there's not going to be exciting new transistor technologies. Actually, I can see exciting new transistor technology for the next—as far as you can really plot these things out, is about six to eight years, and it's very, very clear to me the advances that we're going to make to keep improving the transistor technology, but they're more expensive."

Faster PCs will keep on coming, but creating them is becoming ever more complex.

Interesting read. Makes me think about how each gpu manufacturer is trying different things to work around this. Nvidia is going the DLSS route to try to improve performance without increasing transistors while AMD is going with chiplets.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this will eventually impact global markets in ten years or so when the effects of Moore's law ending are much more impactful. A huge chunk of the economy revolves around better and better tech. Will tech continue to improve at a similarly marketable rate in other ways or will this usher in an era of stagnation in the tech market?

I don't know, I think things might stagnate for a little while.  Look at how well FSR works even on older cards today.  You can use a 7970 that's a decade old today, load up Cyberpunk 2077 with FSR and enjoy good visuals and decent performance.  Maybe not RT, but still good visuals.  Also look at the latest and greatest GPU's right now, they're having a hard time moving product.  Yeah, the 4090 is a powerhouse and a beast, but why bother unless you're at 4k / 120?  I dunno, definitely a very intriguing market right now.

Quantum computing with take place in the industry to replace the current ecosystem. Much like we maxed out the potential of the steam engine and the internal combustion engine was born advancing that field and so on.

This. The current industry and technological eco system will move to the next level eventually, which is quantum.

Quantum computing requires extremely low temperatures, and I don't think that will change so unless we figure out how to make things really cold in small places for cheap, I doubt quantum computers will ever work for consumers.
