Another blow in a string of what feels like many in this space. What's an alternative? I know EVGA has their Precision software, but I assumed you only got that with their GPUs which hey guess what they stopped making. Maybe I am wrong on that, not sure.

Not sure on continued X1 support. I would imagine it is there for every generation they made and that should be it. As far as Afterburner, MSI said in the article that they would try to continue support for the tool which makes sense.

While MSI Afterburner updates have stalled for a while, I do not think that MSI will let it crash and burn considering the following it has and that it is almost the defacto tool for GPU monitoring/overclocking. 

 

EVGA Precision is OK, but IMHO nothing on MSI Afterburner.  Looking at the updates to the Article, it seems that MSI are confident it is not the end. However WB said that about Henry Cavil and Superman, and we know how that went lol.

Remember when you could just overclock from the nvidia control panel with a couple sliders? Peppridge farms remembers...

You can still do that in the Linux nvidia control panel....I don't know why they removed it in the Windows version.

 

But anyway....the solution would be to open source Afterburner...put it up on Gitlab or Github, then it could live forever.

Yeah for sure. I think in this case its the original developer isn't getting paid by MSI.

Having only used EVGA cards before, well, when they existed. I only stuck to Precision X1/XOC/etc. Is there no alternative as I imagine EVGA won't develop that much going forward for obvious reasons.

There were ever only two real players (X1, Afterburner) for modern cards. There are quite a few tools out there for legacy cards. From the reading I did, MSI will pick up the torch and carry afterburner forward, but who knows how long that will take and what support for what cards will be effected along the way. You are right about X1 support.

If MSI do take it on, hopefully they will keep it an open tool and not put in restrictions to make it an MSI biased tool.

I remember when Precision X1 was somewhat competitive with Afterburner. I don't remember when it happened, but eventually PX1 became riddled with bugs, resource hog, slow.. got really annoying to use, even when hooked up with an EVGA GPU. I mentioned this to a buddy, but since HWINFO64 already works so well with RTSS, I think it'd work great if Martin and Unwinder hooked up and made a combined app baby. I'd pay $10/yr for a license, with everything integrated.. it would be glorious.

 

At this point, I don't really use Afterburner much anymore. I set my curve/settings, lock the settings, and set it to load the settings on startup. Don't run Afterburner for monitoring, I just keep HWINFO64 in the background and push those sensors to RTSS for my OSD. Works out great, plus I can see more sensors such as Hotspot, WaterT, flow, etc.

There's also tons of open source overclocking tools on github. The only thing useful from MSI Afterburner was the voltage control on their custom cards.
