Benchmarking: Geekbench-6 GPU

As fun as this may be, I think that this is another benchmark where you can use unrealistic clocks (same as GPUPI).
I was running the core at 2280-2295mhz though the actual clocks under decent load from a 3D benchmark are between 2160 and 2200mhz. The same goes for the memory, it was scaling all the way up to +900mhz where I usually sit around +750 for an artifact free image. 

 

@J7SC_Orion Regarding the heater, I'm really curious how much difference it would make on water.
It'll also dump extra heat into the water, which will have a negative effect on the core temperature. For anything colder on the core itself a heater like that is really useful, and probably needed to compete 😄

  

...not sure whether clocks are 'unrealistic' per se (my 3090 Strix has been at 2280 or > for all these years). Key is to remember that this bench and its sub-components is meant for cross-platform, so power limited. The peak watts for all my GPUs is low with Geekbench-6, thus they don't heat up internally as much (up to 76.3 Billion transistors on N4 🧐) and can therefore hit their best levels.

 

FYI, I have used the 3240 MHz curve of the RTX 4090 for Superposition 8K at > 560W so way more peak watts; I probably could add some more clocks for Geekbench-6 ...will test that out next weekend, along with EEC setting. In any case, similar GPU types face the same benefits / limitations with Geekbench-6 so not a skew.

Regarding the Elmorlabs RTX VRAM heater, I know someone who uses it with a chiller setup and it apparently it works great. But that's also another reason I don't do HWBot anymore - I still like a bit of benching now and then, but then turn around w/o rebooting and do some productivity / work on it, then play some FS2020.  Same cooling setup...one-size-fits-all settings, apart from MSI AB clock profiles 😁

I know what you mean, but if I would keep those settings and run Port Royal next it'll crash while collecting the system info. 
You could say that the driver isn't really optimized for those less demanding tasks, where it could actually boost higher and possibly keep those clocks a bit longer instead of downclocking in between. Precision X1 has the nice 'boost lock' function, but if I use X1 with the current bios on my card it'll try to 'update' the firmware. Like I said before, it is a fun benchmark to try in between but I would never use this to compare cards myself.

...fyi, no down-clocking with the curve setup I use on the 4090, even though NV panel is not set to 'max performance'. I find Geekbench-6 useful to compare same-gen GPUs, but as you know, also use a variety of other benchies...3DM, Unigine Superpos8K, Octanebench, Blender and so forth. Also adding ML benches now re. a work project

Ehhh, green or red, they both pump out frames lol.  I think you'll have fun with it.  Looking back on it NOW, yeah I should've waited for the 6950XT, but whatever.  Both cards are fantastic, especially now that prices are dropping on them.

@Mr. Fox ...you'll have a lot of fun with it as you can use tools such as MPT (MorePowerTool) that have way more options to manipulate the GPU than most NVidia tools. Furthermore, the way AMD vbios of these gens works, you do not have to flash the actual vbios when using MPT (unlike my comment below in the last paragraph re. 6900XT >> 6950XT). There are lots of sub-menus in MPT, and it pays to read up on them, including on the 'Features / temp_dependent_vmin...' steps. So MPT is your ticket into this and you can download it > here .

 

The usual word of caution though -- theoretically, you can run 1.3v core or more and 600 W...and if you go too crazy ☠️. I created a few profiles with MPT for my daily-workhorse-6900XT (after saving the original profile of course) which range from mild to wild. As always, watch the temps as you kick up voltages and PL limits after establishing a stock baseline. My card, a custom w-cooled Giga-G-OC 6900XT, has a good 3x8 pin VRM / PCB / dual bios and with a few MPT steps, I got it up to ~ 2900 MHz purely on ambient temp water-cooling.

 

Geekbench-6 and > its 8 newer tests for GPU Open CL is not without its challenges, but as discussed above, it does not heat the cards up very much due to lower PL as it is cross-platform for Windows, Linux, Android, and macOS.  It includes some ML and other new tech. So Geekbench-6 is probably a good, 'safe' app to try for a card-gen new to you as you wrote, such as recent team red.  

 

@pioneerisloud ...fyi, there is a way to flash a 6900XT to a compatible 6950XT (read: same basic model by same vendor) in Ubuntu, but it is fiendishly complex in terms of sequential steps. I would only try that with a dual-bios card, though.

I have the MSI Gaming 6900XT.  I'm pretty sure it'd flash just fine.  Ubuntu + Complex = I'm not going to try though and risk bricking my card.  :lachen:

Honestly, I doubt its going to perform much better than it does as is.  I'm at right around 2600MHz on the core under load, stock memory, and my hotspot temp hits 110*C already.  Core temp is fine, stays under 65C.

...the 6900XTs are a ton of fun to 'oc' with the right tools, and very rewarding at 1080p and 1440p (4K is a bit trickier due to the memory bus width)...'regular' Time Spy Graphic Score ~ >25k. That hotspot temp you mentioned, though...needs more of 🥶

 

...Octanebench below (for CUDA) is another bench I did a brief thread on earlier. But unlike Geekbench-6, it is a pig on gas watts. Below is a triple-GPU one which slurped up close to 1300W just for the GPUs...TR 340W CPU on top of that - also a great way to test the resilience of your cooling loop, and/or heat your house in the winter...

Max for the Strix 3090 Ampere at a light load and room temp (ambient was 24 C) 😉. That was with the KingPin 520W r_BAR vbios.

 Phones are one of the few pieces of technology that I don't upgrade until they stop working.

I find it really difficult to get excited about smartphones. I think they call them that because they make the people that love them extra dumb. I really don't like them very much. The only value I typically find in them is the role they serve as a camera on the go. I think they are a real detriment in the grand scheme of things, and a tool that governments use for nefarious purposes probably more than we realize. They are an always-on tracking device and only a fool would believe they aren't being used for surveillance of the users.

 

I will install GB6 and post a score so the data will be available. I don't really care if the score is good or not.

I use NVCleanStall to strip out all of the useless trash that the Green Goblin packs into the GeFarts drivers (like GeFarts Experience and what not). I'm really not liking this gamerboy rubbish included in the Adrenaline "Pro" malware.

there used to be a hacky way to do it but I dunno if it still works. 

 

download the driver -> start the installation -> cancel immediately after it finishes "unpacking to C:/xxx/yyy/AMD" -> device manager -> browse for files -> chose the C:/xxx/yyy/AMD folder as the source

... @The Pook 's suggestion may work. Since the 6900XT is in my workhorse machine (4090 above is in the gamer), I only sporadically bench it. There are a few settings in the AMD driver you should definitely disable though, including the initial overlay that appears on the top right when 3D kicks in, as well as various reporting functions, which all eat up fps (for AMD's AI collection...).

Yeah, that gosh-awful overlay thing... talking about being OD'd on stupid... makes me want to punch somebody... real bad. The GPU hotspot scores are absolutely ludicrous. I can see why people are scared to get too crazy with the overclocking if they are trying to cool this on air. My office is 77°F (25°C) which certainly doesn't help.

 

OK, here are stock baseline scores. Now that we have that out of the way... Onward and upward! 😆 GPU block and chilled water... better things ahead!

Decent start !

Once you water-cooled it, you can throw some serious MPT at it (as linked earlier)...might not give you all the clocks but certainly helps with PL, LLC and such. My 6900XT uses a Bykski block for ~ 2 years w/o issue.

Drivers wise, I've heard you can install the Pro drivers, but I've never given it a try.  I just put up with the garbage tbh, figure with enough GPU horsepower I can just power through the malware.  Now, I HAVE gone through, unpacked the driver package, and just installed the inf through device manager.  That does work.  On Windows 10/11 though, I cannot verify if Adrenaline Software would get installed automatically later by Windows Update or not, that's another problem entirely.

I'll be honest, I run my 6900XT at stock or underclocked 99% of the time.  I run 2.60GHz on it for benchmarks as its known to be stable on my card, but my hotspot temp is just too hot.  I don't trust 110*C loads, no matter if its "safe" or not.

You have no idea how much I love reading your rants about things like this, as I can relate. I just hate any software where they invested more time into making it look good rather than making it work properly.
Give me software like the ASUS APEX Tool or HOF_NVVDD, not some useless fancy looking AMD or iQue software 🤮

Heck, I wouldn't mind if my windows looked like XP and would be as lightweight with just the options I need for it to function. No, instead I'm spending hours on stripping an installation for it to not use loads of memory right after installation with all the crap they force down our throats..

I can identify with not wanting huge, spiffy control packages that just slow things down and are full of 'negative options' in the default settings. @Mr. Fox ...when revisiting your 6900XT screenies above, there's some good news in there - seems your card does 1.2V natively at times, which would mean it could be an XTXH and should have more headroom once MPT_ized (which works with most versions anyhow). Perhaps run a Superposition 4K or 8K with HWInfo open and max oc settings to take another look.

That is good news. I can manually set 1.200V and it stays there and never moves. And, I need some good news because right now I am disappointed to a degree... about two things.

 

First, the AMD driver tweak tool doesn't seem to remove any garbage. It merely provides an alternative way of installing the driver with a couple of tweaks. All of the worthless trash is still there. So, I have to figure out a way of killing the processes and services so they stay dead unless I manually trigger them intentionally, instead of immediately restarting. I wish AMD had a Control Panel that was not DCH/UWP trash for W10/11. Seems like they do not. I will try the oldest available driver for 6900 XT and see if it has been that way since day 1. It sucks that all of the hardware OEMs muppets are kissing Micro$lop's butt like this.

 

On a much sadder note, it appears the firmware on this 6900 XT is incompatible with Windows 7. I have spent hours trying to make it work. (Literally stayed up all night trying to get it to work, took a shower and started work.) I tried a half dozen Windows 7 Macrium Reflect images, manually changed to a few different bootx64.efi files (including a custom one that allows pure UEFI mode for Windows 7) and even tried a clean install. 100% failure on all attempts. Windows 7 setup refuses to run with the 6900 XT installed. Tried USB and DVD... both the same. It hangs before it reaches the first screen of the setup GUI. If I put the NVIDIA GPU back in it boots right up like normal. So, it has to be the AMD firmware.

 

The GPU is not bootable in CSM mode (Windows 7 freezes at boot CSM with enabled, which is the exact opposite of the expected behavior) and in UEFI mode (CSM disabled) Windows boots fine and the driver installs but the GPU has code 12 (no available resources/resource conflicts). Coincidentally, this is the same issue I had with 4090... exactly. I was able to mod a driver, but same code 12 and same freezing behavior. So, that really sucks.

 

Maybe I can find an older 6900 XT vBIOS that has CSM support. I hope so. Being able to use Windows 7 was one of the things that I was looking forward to. Benching is a lot less fun if you are stuck being forced to the newer cancer OSes that ruin CPU performance.

...the 1.2V is a good sign re. binning, as much as MPT can help to get well past that voltage (I can get to ~ 2900 MHz max). Still, better to start out with a good bin in the first place 🙂

 

...as this is my workhorse card, I never tried Win 7 hacks (only use RDNA2 with Win 10 Pro and 11 Pro, Ubuntu), but allegedly, there are some Win 7 RDNA2 hacks, ie. > here ...can't say anything about the thread / post / attachment as I haven't tried nor am a member. 

 

...installing just via .inf may work; in any case, I also have MSI AB working, but you have to keep in mind that the core-MHz number is a mix of min and max the way this AMD gen works, so just experiment to find the corresponding core boost number. First though, set MSI AB / settings / AMD > 'extend overclocking limits' and may be also disable ULPS...those will prompt a reboot. 

 

Overall though, MPT is your best friend when oc'ing RDNA2.

Also, as discussed before, if you keep the Adrenalin setup,turn off the overlay that kicks in (top right) when doing 3D. Apart from that, kill AMD Experience if enabled, and also ALL monitoring things such as 'issue detection.
