The internet is currently buzzing about mentions of Left 4 Dead 3 appearing in files for the upcoming Counter-Strike 2. So apparently Valve can count to 3 â€” not the 3 the majority of their fans will want I imagine but still, why is it there at all in a huge upgrade for CS:GO?

Mentioned in a Reddit post, it shows up with some curious strings:

No doubt that lots of thing are "in development" at Valve. "For release" is another story.

I think we can all agree that we'd like to see anything from Valve at all. A CS refresh was expected which is nice... but it's basically the bare minimum for game development from Valve in 2023.

I feel like these types of leaks have persisted ever since HL3 became a meme. L4D3 has existed as comments left behind in source code for years. It's been worked on and subsequently abandoned. Tech demo screenshots exist, although they have no context. Nobody on the outside knows its current status.

L4D2 on modded servers is my favorite gameplay experience of all-time. There is a case to be made for L4D3 because Turtle Rock's Back for Blood seems to have missed the mark in many ways.

Valve doesn't do 3's.

I will keep my expectations in check for now. I still think Back4blood is a pretty good alternative in terms of gameplay.

Does it have the secret sauce that Valve's L4D has? No. The community support will never be the same when features gated behind "cards" and DLC in B4B. However, I am hopeful a new L4D comes out and brings back that community aspect. All the mods like Helms Deep and custom modes made L4D a blast on PC.

Heck, I bet L4D2 still holds up really well.

L4D2 holds up exceptionally well and it's largely because the game isn't micromanaged. I stopped playing a few months before the Last Stand update, but the custom map community still appears to be going very strong. HS Top on YouTube still puts out videos regularly that continue to surprise me about trick plays that you can perform in the game, and Andre Ng does a good job of showcasing custom campaign map secrets and gameplay facts.

I stopped playing partly because online play is a massive timesink, but that's where most of the game's replay value is. I wore out the official campaigns long ago, the pure game experience feels lacking after you've played on modded servers, and the team play dynamic and randomness isn't there in single player because the bots are stupid.

Of course! I'm pretty sure they made a campaign for it too. One of the OG L4D2 custom maps. Zombies funnel up the ramp. I think you can blow up the metal grate too. I haven't played L4D2 in years but definitely was a thing.

I haven't watched this but this video comes up when I search it.

Man this takes me back.

My buddy and I used to play and we'd always impersonate the characters in voice chat. Our favorite was to be Bill grabbing stuff. "Grabbin' heroin!....I mean adrenaline."

I loved L4D 1&2. I would enjoy seeing a 3rd but as others have said, I will believe it when its on my game library. Valve have left old school breadcrumbs in game text files for ages, certainly not indicative of actual ongoing development... unfortunately.

I have to admit, im annoyed by Valve. They could of been such a leading game developer but from the outside...they just got sort of lazy.  Even Counter Strike 2 stinks of laziness....its just Counter Strike with a graphical facelift, nothing "New" in the slightest, going by what I have seen so far. Stuck in the past.

I gave up hope on HL3 ages ago, along with anything new from Valve 😞 Really sucks, they had a short lived golden era.

I didn't know there was custom modded campaigns for L4D2......that game's still quite a bit of fun!  Honestly, most of Valve's titles are still fun today.  I'd totally play some custom map L4D2 if anyone else still plays, never done that before. :wheee:  I've done custom mapped HL / HL2, and coop campaigns on both (thanks to Sven coop).

And yeah, I agree with everyone else.  We all know Valve can't count to 3.  Such a shame too because Valve does make my absolute favorite titles.  Too bad there's a handful of titles and that's it. -_-

Helm's Deep Reborn was a creative use of game assets to make the game function in a way that wasn't intended by Valve, to great effect. It gave a narrative purpose to survival mode. I never played any other survival map because the entire mode felt pointless to me otherwise.

That map is so difficult that it worked well with the servers I played on, which supported up to 12 players. We also had increased difficulty mods including double tank spawns, increased horde sizes, and one-hit kill witches, but we also gained firepower with infinite minigun ammo and repositionable turrets. Since this is a survival map played on a survival game server, I don't think we had a CS-like buy menu system available for this map.

Anyway, the mod potential of L4D2 is so vast unlike other games of the genre that the replayability factor for the game is nearly limitless as long as you can embrace the game's core mechanics.

I kindly disagree with that but I understand the disappointment on face value. I think there is tremendous value to update and support an ecosystem and community over many years. All those backend upgrades SHOULD make CS thrive for many years to come.
