Russia's cyberwarfare playbook leaked

Recommended Posts

Quote

The files' authenticity has been confirmed by five Western intelligence agencies and several independent cybersecurity companies. They link a Vulkan cyber-attack tool with hacking group Sandworm, which the US government said twice caused blackouts in Ukraine and disrupted the Olympics in South Korea. It is also thought to be behind the launch of NotPetya.

The tool, codenamed Scan-V, scans the internet for vulnerabilities, storing what it discovers for later analysis and for use in cyberattacks. Another, called Amezit, is described as a framework for controlling the online information environment and manipulating public opinion through methods such as creating fake social media profiles. It is also used to "enhance psychological operations, and store and organize data for upstream communication of efforts."

Major intelligence leak on Russian online disinformation efforts. It reads like something out of a movie.

Can we just press the button already? Our AEGIS missile defense can shoot down anything they retaliate with. As well as other systems we don't even know about.

Nothing against the Russian people but man, they really need "regime change".

In a scenario like that, it's safe to assume a lot of missiles would be launched at once. Missile defense might be able to reliably deal with a small number of threats, but not a full-scale attack.

Some major change in Russia does seem like a likely end to all this, but I doubt if it will be a change for the better until/unless the Russian people decide to take control over their own government.

Probably right on the large scale attack thing, and I agree with you about the change being a likely outcome. One can only hope.

No surprises here. Threats that need mitigation.

Russian cannot compete militarily, but if they can turn a country against its own interests it often doesn't really need to. The just need to stoke division. Different countries have different levers to pull.
