NVIDIA GPU BIOS flashing tools can now flash any BIOS to any GPU, bypassing restrictions

According to a report from TechPowerUP, software engineers and modders have managed to bypass NVIDIA’s BIOS mismatch restrictions through the discovery of a backdoor.

Kefi, the developer behind nvflashk, has successfully identified a “mismatch bypass” backdoor in NVIDIA firmware flashing tool. This capability enables the flashing software to attempt firmware updates on a wide range of GeForce GPUs. As an illustrative example, Kefi suggests it might even be possible to flash an RTX 3060 BIOS onto an RTX 4090, although such attempts should never be performed.

What's that burning smell 🫠 ? ...I have been in pm contact 'elsewhere' a few times with Veii, and both he and Kefi were posting recently at the 4090 thread 'elsewhere' before/at 'release day' - they both seem like very capable and likable fellows. I bet you right about now, TPU's 'unverified GPU bios' segment is getting combed for various-gen XOC vbios....I can hardly wait for a new inexperienced user to complain after loading a 1000 W vbios on their air-cooled entry-level card 😬. It is of course recommended to only try this if you have a dual vbios on your card, or at least an iGPU - and very good cooling.

In any case, I hope they follow this up with some sort of vbios editor that works on the latest NVidia gens (touring, ampere, ada lovelace). I fondly recall my first real GTX6xx series bios modding > via Notepad !! Those were the days...This being an arms-race of sorts, NVidia engineers are probably very busy right about now pushing new micro-codes
