Amazon sold a fake RTX 4090 FrankenGPU cobbled together using a 4080 GPU

A prominent repair channel on YouTube is warning prospective graphics card buyers that a customer sent in an Amazon-purchased GeForce RTX 4090 which turned out to be a very bad fake. The video, shared by Tony from North West Repair (NWR), underlines the adage ‘buyer beware’ with a bright neon marker. What his customer thought was probably a quick repair job on a $2,000 card turned out to be a ‘no fix’ scam made from a cobbled-together and motley mix of components, including a "fried" RTX 4080 GPU and PCB. The graphics card also had a host of other issues that pointed to a badly cobbled-together FrankenGPU.

Amazon is just a collection of individual sellers, like ebay. I'm sure this kind of thing happens all the time. No doubt Amazon issued a refund once they understood the situation, and probably also banned the seller.

First of all, don't buy electronics from Amazon that aren't shipped from an Amazon warehouse, least of all second-hand GPUs.

Second, credit card payments only. Chargebacks are an invaluable defense for consumers.

Finally, based on what's explained in the original video, it appears that this was plucked from a pallet of Amazon returns. That means that the GPU wasn't purchased on Amazon.com at all but from some other retailer that advertises these Amazon mystery boxes because Amazon does not sell pallets of returned crap first-party.

No part of this was a good idea. Maybe you'll get a bunch of defective or nonfunctional e-waste, maybe you'll get a hazmat situation. Just no.

Yeah it sounds more like someone bought the 4090, then returned their borked card instead of the 4090.  The old swaparoo.

Seems more like a 1 off scenerio than something to get worked up over.

I tried that once in person with a xbox controller at a Walmart. (don't judge me, I'm not usually a corrupter LOL)

I was mighty impressed the dude checked the serial number on the receipt to the controller. LMAO.

Yeah, Walmart learned their lessons with the 2TB Western Digital Green HDD's we all used to snag out of the enclosures and return dead drives in them.......  I mean, not "we", I certainly never did such a thing 20 years ago in Mexico.........  🤣

The ol' switcheroo doesn't really work that much anymore tbh.  Second hand, and securing an absolutely solid deal is somehow a LOT more fulfilling, and fun even.

lol, this is a store that has 1 person ck'n out people and the rest are self ck out (except electronics & automotive),then they pay someone to ck your purchases against your receipt as you leave. You think they WOULDN'T ck every possible money loss? They STILL won't let me use the employee rest room after I scan my $200-$300 worth of groceries.🤣
