for some reason my battery was OK to start in ~10F the past three days but decided it was death time after sitting at work when it was 65F

also dunno why the previous owner paid ~$199+ for a shite factory Varta H5 with only 380 CCA 😢

production date is 2019 tho so at least it lasted a while I guess

Premium Bronze

Went car shopping for my nephew after a timing belt destroyed his 1994 Subaru Legacy Wagon motor recently.  The car was  $800, already a sh*tbox and the prior owner literally treated it like a lifted jeep with about 50k worth of suspension mods.  Needless to say it didn't surprise me.

Picked up a surprisingly immaculate 2000 Toyota Camry with the 2.2L.  Plenty of new parts as it was clearly in a recent wreck but the body is perfectly straight and the interior is perfect.  Prior owner even installed a nice android auto system in it.  NGK plug wires, nice "ultra high performance all season"  BFGoodrich tires on it, nice interstate brand batter, doesn't seem to burn a drop of oil, etc.  Prior owner clearly appeared to have at least spent the money on good parts which typically means well maintained.

That said, not even 24 hours later it dies minutes after filling up the gas tank and we also realize the fuel gauge doesn't work.  I drove up to his work hours later where it died in the lot and he parked it.  Started up great for me and if anything it felt considerably peppier than the test drive.

It was an auction car prior to the shop getting it so I'm thinking adding the 9 gallons of fuel kicked up a lot of crud in the gas tank that was probably sitting for a while and it temporarily caused a fueling issue which resolved itself by sitting.

4 speed auto trans shifts smooth, everything power works, etc.   Hoping it was a simple blip because the only warranty he got on it was for major issues such as trans slipping, engine noise, etc.   The car at 24 years old has 177k so it's not young but from my understanding these are pretty much top tier in reliability, even by Toyota standards.

I just tried to get an insurance quote for my Lexus again.

£179/month. I'm currently paying £185/month for my Alfa. Before I bought my Alfa, I was only getting "go away" quotes of like £3K/month or just straight up denying insurance.

On our Lexus we are paying $47 a month for the legal minimum insurance, in this case liability only. Age/ credit score/ address all matter for the rate you end up with. Also the UK gets ripped off.

My Alfa has a turbo, but it doesn't really do turbo noises. The internet told me this is because it doesn't have a blow off valve, and it turns out the internet is wrong. It does have one as shown by this video of someone else with a stock Mito, only change was the air filter.

This is what the intake system is like stock, because of the airbox and sound deadening properties of the stock airfilter, you don't hear that sound at all. It gets drowned out by the engine sound.

image.thumb.png.1bb8b2c393e04410c7ca68c8a0e630ea.png

To make it do the turbo sounds, I have two options.

Option one is this.

image.thumb.png.ff5687d8a561bcb738dae057ccca04dd.png

The pros is that it's cheaper, the turbo sound is going to be louder. The cons is that because the pressurized air doesn't go back into the turbo, the spool time will increase slightly. I'll still have the same power and torque though.

Option two is doing this.

image.thumb.png.fb6fc901c6ec2a3b9ae8dded1a63a34f.png

The pro is that it's going to be much easier to do and the spool time won't be reduced that much but the cons are it's going to be more expensive (by a significant amount actually) and the turbo sounds won't be quite as loud.

The image just puts it over the top.

I love this place sometimes.

I ran no BOV or BPV on the nissan, let the turbo impeller surge as it needed. I was doing the lazy route lol. Really should have fixed that..

Edit: @Andrew look up extrude honing one time - that's the only good option for improving turbo performance with the stock manifolds. And because of the way it hones the inside of a manifold it's just an improved original part. Totally legal anywhere.

Extrude honing has been a thing also here in Canada for eons - I've seen a once 'porous' big block intake manifold treated with that method - shiny on the inside

  • 2 weeks later...

Fianlly got around to properly fixing my sunroof leak (rerouted the drain tubes to the AC drain line).  It was a real PITA but this is an actual permanent fix vs just replacing the crappy plastic end tube that goes into the firewall (which will fail in time as it's a horrible factory design Nissan never fixed).  It's been raining since last night and won't stop till Monday so if it's completely leak free I'll button it up.  As much as I enjoy the race car look of tons of missing interior panels and exposed floor pans I need to get it back to looking normal.

Thankfully the sunroof on the Lexus doesn't appear to leak just yet. I've heard it's a trouble spot for this model as well and I figure I'll eventually have to DIY fix it myself.

Though I do have to say I am definitely being spoiled driving around in this fancy car. Considering I've owned $300 trucks I could see the yellow stripes in the road through the bottom of the doors I'd say I've come a long way lol.

Only real complaint is the PO got the roof mounted antenna ripped off in a carwash (how?!??) and now the radio only works kinda sorta okay for reception. Thinking I'll go to the pick n pull locally and see if I can find one on a Highlander or something.

How much weight saved going with those seats?   Still tempted to replace the driver seat only in my G37 with one as the "non-sport" edition seats I have in mine have me relying on the steering wheel and door (with my knee) for stability during remotely fast turns.   Really not wanting to give up too much cruising comfort though.

Honestly - not that much. Seat+rail is like 12-15kg total. The stock seat+rail is ~16-17kg. These were very difficult to install, as is expected with near zero space around them. I couldn't torque it, so just did guduntite.

These are more comfortable, look nicer, easier to clean+maintain, and most importantly actually hold you in. Wish it didn't have 'RECARO' in big letters, but of all the name brand bucket seats at least their name/logo is all right.

If you keep doing this kind of work on your car, soon you'll be exhausted.

Yes, thanks. My exhaust actually just arrived, so I need to go pick it up.

I'll do exhaust -> spoon subframe and trans braces -> koyo rad. Replacing the oil somewhere in between there.

It's been a minute since I was on the forum.  My daily is still going strong 33k miles on the new short block, and crossed 300k for the first time on any of my vehicles. :applaud:

Million mile WRX when?

At my current pace, I'm about 22 years from hitting the million mile mark. I don't think I'll make it there, but 500k might be possible. :vehicle_drive1:

The new short block does have me a little worried (not really), since it's the first EJ block I've had that doesn't consume oil as part of it's daily diet.  The original block in this car would typically lose 1+ quarts every 3k miles, and every other one, consumed at least 1/2 quart between oil changes.

Installed the Legalis R today, was actually a lot easier than I thought. Still need to do some of the braces underneath, but that's for another day.

It shaves off around 4-5kg, and should sound oem+
