UniFi Switch 16 XG

I can't believe I paid this much just to have a 10Gb connection from my NAS to my desktop.  NewEgg had it $50 below MSRP with a promo code for an additional $15 off and I've been drooling over this for months.  Now I need a pair of Mellanox network cards and some fiber and I'm good to go.

10 Gig not cheap, I went with the Unifi SW-48 to get two 10 Gig SFP ports to connect my main PC and my NAS then have 48 ports to do the rest of my eventual house with no issues.

I just picked up some Mellanox ConnectX-3 cards off eBay that came with 5m DAC cables since I didn't need longer than that.  I thought about the 16 XG like you got, but I only had the two devices I want on 10 Gig for now and figured I can always just expand later with some little Microtik 10 Gig Switches or a used 16 XG.

Similar to factorio except the game doesn't end when you build a rocket to get to space.

Just scored a 5900x from Best Buy ???

I thought switches supported any speed? Like forever? As long as it's ethernet? I always thought the limiting factors were cables, NICs, and Routers

Congrats on scoring a 5900x.

Most Switches will support any speed up to what they are rated at.  So most Consumer Switches over the last almost decade are Gigabit (1 gbps) switches, but support Ethernet (10 mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100 mbps) no flawlessly.

Now we are starting to see multi-gig consumer switches that support 2.5 gbps and 5 gbps on top of those previous speeds all using copper.

Copper Ethernet through your typical 8-pin RJ-45 port can reach 10 gbps in some cases, mostly in data center with short runs, but normally when you want 10 gbps or higher (25, 40, 100 gbps) you use Fibre or DAC cables using SFP+ ports on switches.

What I mean is, isn't the speed limiting factor of ethernet the copper itself? A switch that can't to 10 GBps is trash, imo. I could be full of it.

I think you are thinking of 10 or 10/100 Mbps ethernet, and yes that is slow, but 10 Mbps was blazing fast in 1982. ?

Once you get up to high enough speeds the copper itself does become a limiting factor, but for consumer gear, looking at the slow adoption of 10 Gbps, that is probably a decade away.

There are very few switches on the market for consumers (at a reasonable price) that can do 10 Gbps with standard RJ45 copper connectors.  Anything with more than one or two 10G RJ45 ports is going to be $300+ dollars.

The theoretical limit of copper as a medium is effectively irrelevant for home networks both today and for the foreseeable future. Cat 8 cable supports 40 Gbps over a maximum channel length of 30 meters.

Switches that cannot do 10 Gbps are still the overwhelming majority of the consumer market. I agree with tictoc in that 10 Gbps gear probably won't gain mainstream consumer adoption for up to another decade if not longer.

Coinbase and Kraken are the best for this sort of thing, I'd recommend Coinbase as they're going to be a public trading company and therefore will be forced to have consumer protection. I personally just went with Uphold (at least for now) because it was the only one that would validate me in a reasonable amount of time, I wanted to get in with the Dogecoin pump and dump before it was too late.

I made the right choice because my Coinbase validation email just came through yesterday and it said the ID I provided wasn't good enough. Coinbase does seem to have the best support for offline wallets as well. Given that cryptocurrency has no regulations, you shouldn't consider any coin you bought to actually be yours until it's stored in an offline wallet.

As soon as I get my money back after fees, I'm going to cash out on Uphold and move to Coinbase.
