My living room consists of a PC with an i5 4590S with a Silverstone AR11 and custom intake shroud with ASUS Turbo 1070Ti in a Alienware x51 with Logitech K400+ and Nixeus Revel for gaming, Toshiba 39" 1080p TV from 2012 (surprisingly good as a monitor), Simple Audio Listen (RIP) with a 40W JVC sub.

I'm really happy with this setup as is. If I'm too lazy to go downstairs to game on my big TV, I just popup a folding table, slap a mouse mat for my Revel and voila, games at 1080p like a beast

The speaker setup just as is (The Simple Audio Listen) is really good as PC speakers, the Bass is good if you have them against a wall, but because of the size, it won't fill a room. That's why I added a 40W JVC sub for the living room.

I guess you should move my Polk Audio PSW111 to the retired column, it randomly power cycles every ~10 seconds or so and it's really annoying so it's unplugged. I still have it but it's currently only being used as furniture lol.

it's probably the next audio investment :excited_w00tbrows:

Not really into speakers personally (not yet, at least), but I just wanted to say, I picked up a pair of Polk R50s on sale last Black Friday, $60 each I think. Been using them more recently given current world events, and they're really nice, especially for the price. When I bought them, reviews basically said for $130 each, they're really good and I got them for less than half that. Absolute steal, it seems.

Updated my entry. As said in the headphone thread, had to replace my oDAC over the weekend. While I was hooking up my turntable, I set a ground spike through my audio gear and the only thing that took a hit, fortunately, was the the oDAC. Still sucks but it be like that.

Also, since I guess it is relevant, I added my pair of Schiit Sys's to my entry. I wasn't using them before due to not having the turntable, but now they are re-implemented. Somehow, I ended up with 2 despite only purchasing 1. Schiit just told me to keep 'em, so that was sick. Use them both as passive toggles, 1 for out to either my Asgard or Darkvoice (speaker vs headphone toggle), and 1 for in from the turntable or the dac to the amp (PC vs Turntable toggle)

I have equipment, but apartment life has it in a functional setup that is no where near pretty. But you can't see the clutter when the lights are out to enjoy viewing :p

That is the trick, especially with poor cable management...no lights...no problems :friends_gathering:

Hey guys/gals.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for home theater stuff. I got some stuff a long while back when I was waaayyyy more budget restricted. I am not looking for anything crazy... but since we finished our basement (and got an LG C9 OLED) and I am using the stuff again I can tell it is lacking. I am not hearing things when listening to music that I can clearly hear on my DT 1990 Pro.

My current setup is:

A pair of Polk Monitor T65 towers (Bi-amp'd)

Mirage Omni S8 Sub

Yamaha RX-V675

Again not looking to do anything crazy... I know this topic can get very expensive very quickly. Just looking for a good upgrade. Not really sure of budget. Just something that I can enjoy my movies and music a bit more on. Oh and I would be limited to 3.1 due to the lack of proper spacing for side channel speakers.

Thanks!

So I have a question for ya, for clarity sake:

What is the Sony AF-7? Google is not helping me here

The mirage 7-msi, is there a specific model for this one?

Quite the impressive setup, thanks for contributing to the madness!

Also, let me know if I missed anything aside from the 2 I already asked about.

It sounds like your highend may be suffering more than anything else. Have you confirmed that your speakers are capable of outputting those sounds? (I.E. reducing the volume and getting close to the speakers to see if you can spot the details)

My theory is it may have something to do with either nodal alignment, or sound treatment. However, if you have tried my test, then it may be something with the amplification, or the preprocessing of the audio. Those Polks should be capable of full range audio, maybe with the exception of a bit of manufacturer tuning for specific output.

Another suggestion may be try messing with the outputs your speakers are connected to on the receiver. I noticed with my buddy's setup, he had some issues where a preset audio mode was doing some processing to essentially remove certain frequencies from certain channels. Especially since you are running what appears to be a 2.1 channel setup on a 7.2 channel receiver, there may be some preprocessing on the head unit that is just cutting frequencies given a specific audio mode.

Shoot. My Bad. I'm sorry. Sony A8F (65) - TV/Monitor in Family room.

Mirage M-7si (They are old - I bought them in like '95 :o ) They still sound good, but need room to breathe. They look like the obelisk in 2001.

I haven't really bought any HiFi gear in a while so yeah, my stuff is old. And it's more likely that if anything is missing, I missed it not you... :)

In the "retired" column:

me.

Sounds good bud, thanks for clarifying!

I mean, I guess in your defense, those JBL's are my Dad's which he bought new in '84, so I respect it.

Family Room Home Theater

  • Mordaunt Short Alumni 8 tower speakers

  • Mordaunt Short Alumni 5 center channel speaker

  • Mordaunt Short Alumni 2 satellite speakers

  • Mordaunt Short Alumni speaker stands

  • Rythmik Audio D15SE Signature Edition 15" sealed downfiring servo subwoofer
  • Onkyo TX-SR706 7.1 channel A/V receiver
  • M2Tech hiFace Two Hi-End USB to S/PDIF output interface with BNC connector

All of the speakers are finished in piano black.

I love this setup for music. I'm always impressed by the soundstage and the depth whenever I listen. I don't have many audio enthusiast friends, so It's by default the best system I've assembled and heard, but it also has a very high WAF. Even the Rythmik D15SE beautifully disguises itself as an end table. Unfortunately, I hardly listen to it now because I haven't turned on the TV much in the past couple of years. My TV and A/V receiver are both seriously in need of an upgrade, and I really want to upgrade the TV to a 65" LG OLED, but if I'm not turning it on, what's the point?

Desktop Workstation

  • Wharfedale Diamond 10.0 bookshelf speakers
  • TSC T100-110 10" ported downfiring subwoofer
  • SMSL Q5 Pro 2.1 channel amplifier

I used to have a Virtue Audio TWO.2 before the Q5 Pro. I accidentally blew out the TWO.2 when I was moving my desk and the speaker wires still connected to the back of the amp fell off the desk, landed right on the coax terminals of my UPS, and tripped the circuit breaker for the room. The Q5 Pro has better bass and the digital display and remote control are nice, but the TWO.2 was better balanced and more detailed overall, and also just a finely crafted piece of hardware.

Pretty lights...

I don't really have a way to give context to the speaker size other than none of them have a woofer size under 12", while the CLS-15S and S2s are 15", and the JBLs are 18". I suppose I could make the argument that I have about 15.2 square feet, or 1.4 square meters of woofer cone.

... And then the lowest sensitivity are the E312s at 94dB@1w-1m with the S2s reaching up to 103. So obviously I throw 19KW at them, not that I ever max the amps much, not really required.

Music is meant to be felt, not heard, yea? I got my HD700s if I want detail, and I got these to make sure the foundation is settled every now and then. ?

Thinking about adding to my collection with one of these guys:

https://www.newegg.com/klipsch-k100-sw/p/0S6-0033-001U0

Always been mildly interested in a subwoofer, and that seems like a great deal. Any immediate thoughts?

Thinking about adding to my collection with one of these guys:

Always been mildly interested in a subwoofer, and that seems like a great deal. Any immediate thoughts?

It doesn't get low enough.  It only gets down to 32hz.  My surround sound speakers do 39hz.  In the low 20's or lower is ideal.

Ah yeah, good call. Honestly I just looked at reviews and not much else. I'll probably keep holding off until I can find something fancy.

Some things I would consider first are your budget, the size of your room, the amount of physical space you can make for the sub, what the other components of your sound system are, what you listen to with that system, and what your expectations for the sub are.

That Klipsch is frequently on sale at Newegg for that price and it’s not a sub that’s worth the $250 “regular” price.

I have a 10" ported downfiring sub/footrest for my desktop workstation, but it originally spent a few years as a home theater placeholder sub before I bought what I really wanted. It's ideal in its current arrangement for listening in front of my computer especially because I’m literally on top of it, but it was nowhere near suitable for a 19'x16'x9' family room that's part of a 40' wide open floor plan.
