...a Canadian Still Life - ...the prior 'wash-me' scribbles have now been covered over by additional road grime , just as I thought it would. Fuel milage might improve a bit though if I decide to clean out the fenders...but at 3 C, I am just not there yet, mentally.

...I wish everyone who laid out some of their medical challenges well. I have a few of my own, but they pale in comparison - what is more, I live in a region with free healthcare, though that can bring with it other non-monetary issues such as long wait-times, among other things. I also like to add that I have a friend who lives in a near-by city now and has been living with MS for two decades and is now permanently in a wheelchair and can only use his left hand. I helped him with some computer stuff a few weeks back, and it is only when you have 'a visual demonstration' when you realize just how debilitating some illnesses and injuries actually are... I did have a recent operation on my back with GA and all that, but that involved an old muscle injury, not deeper than that, and after a couple of days I was back to doing my thing. @neurotix ...you mentioned Gabapentin - I am certainly no doctor dishing out medical advice, but I was briefly on Gabapentin before my doctor switched me to Pregabalin, albeit fairly light dosages. Pregabalin is a newer derivative, though obviously you want to check the side-effects. I am on the minimum dosage because of an old accident where some nerves on the bottom of my right foot were cut. It can get painful, but the Pregabalin helps, as does T3s and extra strength Ibuprofen though I try to limit the intake of T3s. Besides, some of these cause tinnitus, like having serious 'coil whine' in your head - it usually takes two to three days of not taking T3s or Ibuprofen to clear that up. Back to Pregabalin - keep the dosage as light as possible because it can otherwise 'slow you down'. That whole family of that type of meds was originally developed to control seizures for epilepsy, so a 'slow down' is built in... Next...smoking. No need for extra 'quit' advice from me, but as a reformed smoker of extra light cigs, what helped me was 'Thrive' 2mg gum. A few chews of it and I forgot that I was going to go for a smoke... Re. exercise, when you have excruciating pain, exercising can appear like a big bad aggressive dog waiting for you to open the door - and yet, if you can manage to get into s.th. regular, even if it is 'light' like going for extended walks, it has tremendous overall health benefits. When I haven't done my exercises (in a nearby forest, so bonus for mental joy and closeness to God's creation) for a bit, the first two days double the pain in my foot, but then it dramatically declines, and becomes much more manageable than before the time-out that occurred for whatever reason. On building / working on computers - if that is what you like to do, do as much of it as you can with the help of your wife. I'll add that I tend to build very heavy systems (all w-cooled) for work and play with dual mobos, PSUs and so forth, some of which tip the scales at more than 120 pounds (5x 360 x 63 rads, three GPU blocks, heavy tempered glass...). I say this because I have learned that: a.) it is easier using a certain type of 'case' such as TT Core P5,6,7, or 8 (or similar by other vendors) that are mostly open and just have magnetic dust filters on three sides (the front glass is heavy, though you could get a custom Plexiglas replacement). Ease of access... b.) a spinning top table or motorized display such as > this just as an example could also be helpful to you. c.) for the 120+ pound monsters I have, they're hard to even grip correctly never mind move even when healthy, so I use the little computer desks (Ikea, Walmart, Amazon) with wheels as the permanent computer stand, making sure they have the correct weight rating. ...that's the thing with massive monolithic dies that carry 76.3 billion transistors . The alternative, the mGPU chiplets, have instead issues around IF - for now...I expect that to change soon enough as the big three are gaining more experience with their current > mGPU chiplets in the enterprise market. If you look at the Wikipedia-derived tables below, it becomes quite clear that the 4090 > Ti would be very much like the 3090 > Ti on a percentage basis - a minor performance increase compared to the other members of the Ada Lovelace family. Speaking of which, a few days ago, I was at a local outlet of a big chain here to pick up some USB extension cables...while they finally had received a new shipment of 4090s days earlier (like many places in N. America and Europe), all of those had sold out quickly at that location and also mostly online. I know this because I asked just out of habit --- also, no 4090s on the shelves behind the cashier, but four long and double-stacked rows of 4080s and two double-stacked rows of 4070 Tis. Per below, it isn't just the Cuda core count but also the memory bus width - which is critical for Ada Lovelace...the 4090 (and presumably RTX 6000 Ada) can in fact get bottle-necked at 4K by the CPU/RAM in some apps. While many 4090s can reach 24 Gbps (instead of the stock 21 Gbps) on their GDDR6X , still-faster VRAM will be as important as the remaining Cudas, IMO. Finally, there's the power consumption. While 450W for GA102 is technically correct for the lower of two numbers subject to PSU (the other is 600W), I have seen just about 700 W on my 4090 and other folks with an even more aggressive vbios posted 822 W...

...I was actually referring to hardware re. the ample w-cooling my 6900XT gets and thus is a bit more protected. As to software - no, I don't like blackscreens by AMD, NVidia, Intel or really, by anybody. I do have a can of Rustoleum flat black right here in case I ever change my mind on that . After the vapor chamber debacle and other GPU issues such as what you referenced in > this thread, AMD does have to be very careful, not least as their new GPUs are a bit underwhelming re. expected performance. Be that as it may, I am glad that the OP problem seems to be not at their end, and by now they probably are in contact with Krisfix.de to get the serial numbers of the affected cards to track the sales history as much as they can (there are of course resales which can muddy the water). AMD is facing the same economic and other uncertainties many other tech firms now face, all the while they are competing against Intel re. CPUs on the desktop / laptop and the server market, and against Intel and NVidia in the consumer and the important enterprise GPU market. That is a lot to chew on for anybody, but the last thing it needs are quality control issues right now. I do own several AMD GPUs and 3x 16 core CPUs of different gens (used mostly for work related stuff), and I really like the firm, but the last few months have been a bit rough in the quality and PR department - even before > this

...what can I say, some more FS 2020 max everything (+DLSS3, FI, and NVReflex...). First a flight over glacier fields over to Bute Inlet up the coast from here, then Montreal in the snow...I have fond memories of the time I spent in Montreal, though winters can be...very winterish

...NVidia '''launched''' this card > back in September 2022 and I think it was referenced before at EHW, but doesn't hurt a second time for twice the fun ...given the ongoing shortages of 4090s, NVidia will probably sell a fair bit of the RTX 6000 Ada to workstation users...it has more VRAM which is good for machine learning and rendering, albeit slower GDDR6 rather than GDDR6X VRAM, compared to a 4090. Eventually, NVidia will bring out a 4090 Ti - probably shortly before the 5090s (shades of 3090 Ti)...or may be they'll do two or three: A Titan RTX Ada, a 4090 Ti and a 4090 Ti Super ! ...I thought I revisit this old thread for a quick update: The TT 240 AIO which I cleaned and refilled per initial past in the summer of 2020 is still performing flawlessly - now in its 11th year . Idle temps about 1.5 C above ambient and full load never exceeds the 60 C range - it more than paid for itself ! These days, that system is dual-booted, running Kubuntu Linux and Win 7 Pro (mostly the former)... -

But notice how thorough he was with his due diligence, which is why the original vid was posted - and no, he was not breaking cards when taking the cooler off as you suggested above I also reiterate that I've had problems with the latest driver, ditto for other folks per OC forums. The fact that some cards may have had a rough life as a mining card would underscore that there's no margin for error...that leads to another conclusion: Don't buy used mining cards, though at times, sellers might not disclose that...

...^ that is a key point. Drivers with AMD cards are different - most of the bios details (including limits) are written into the Windows registry and accessible, unlike NVidia. Drivers also interact with that and that is why MPT works so well (very popular in the Hardwareluxx community with the guide located there). Take the first screenshot below of my 6900XT (water-cooled in a 1200mm x 63mm dual D5 setup for extra headroom). Stock on the left, but per right side, 520 W, 1.243V is no problem and theoretically I could go to 600W and 1.4V (could, but won't). This does NOT involve vBios flashing as much as my custom card has 3x8 pin and dual vBios (I flashed one for 6950XT / Ubuntu). There are a whole host of other settings w/MPT and driver combo you can change. If the latest AMD driver has a just a minor mistake (as Jay2C suggested just as an example / possibly a decimal point moved), you could end up with serious problems - especially if your setup is air-cooled. I run various system for work (including ML at times) and play - and certainly try to find the sustainable (error-free) limits, per screenie below on just my current work-play builds. I have used both AMD and NVidia cards for well over a decade, and AMD and NVidia are very different in how they handle the vbios-driver relationship, especially on power and voltages. It even affects your CPU OC at the limits (ie. for HWBot) as one GPU type requires a touch more CPU voltages at the limit.

wow - really ? 'This guy' is highly skilled and has equipment that normal repair faculties can only dream about....just take a look at the time-marked video below (actually the whole vid is fascinating). You wrote that "Almost sounds like this guy is cracking dies when he removes the heatsink somehow." - that is a ludicrous insult, not least as he has seen that problem in 48 out of 61 cards his facility alone has been sent - and they are well known in Europe for this kind of niche work. I know that Gigabyte EU also sometimes uses that firm. You are not seriously suggesting that he carelessly screwed up 48 cards ? Next, because his outfit is well known, they would receive a large segment of serious failures. What is more, he is asking online for more input from AMD users rather than jumping to conclusions. The only common factor he could identify so far is the specific driver, and the sudden rush of cards breaking is telling.. It is worth pointing out that AMD has had multiple issues as of late. It was DerBauer (and Igor's lab) who did most of the initial detective work isolating the problem with the vapor chambers (fluid) on reference 7900XT/X. AMD since then confirmed that early sleuthing by DerBauer et al... Finally, I have been enjoying my custom-PCB 6900 XT for almost two years now. It has been problem-free - until I installed the latest driver. Since I uninstalled it, the problems are gone...I repeat: better safe than sorry.

...yeah, better safe than sorry - for now, I stick with the slightly older driver (early November '22). Krisfix.de doesn't fool around; s.th. seems to be going on but hopefully, this gets cleared up soon. It could also just be that folks who have been running custom MPT (up to 600W, ++ V for a 6900XT) may just have had their setup pushed over the edge by a minor change within drivers.

...in case this hasn't been covered here yet, the two related vids are self-explanatory re. even more potential trouble for AMD's GPU division. For what it is worth, I rolled the driver on my 6900XT back - while it didn't blow up (unlike other GPUs) and my GPU is extensively water-cooled anyway, there were definite signs of trouble and unexplained weirdness with the latest Radeon driver...since I rolled it back, no more issues (at least so far).

I am still amazed how seamlessly Win 10 is handling the 3x GPUs (2x + 1x) in the 'Frankenstein' build shown above. I am no friend of MS Windows but I had expected bigger problems - or at least the need to constantly reconfigure graphics settings. For games, it automatically picks the 3090, for rendering and ML, the 3090 and the 2x 2080 Ti combined. I had a nice gaming session on this thing tonight (Forza H 5). The 3090 is perfect for the older 55 inch LG IPS HDR 4K60. Even the four-year old TR 2950X doesn't hinder performance at 4K. It has RAM read speeds of about 103 GB/s (four channel DDR4) which helps with games and of course very much with productivity tasks. This setup is about 100 feet from the other station which includes the 4090 and the 4K/120 OLED. The 4090 not only has close to three times the number of transistors and is about 1 GHz faster than the 3090 (which itself is no slouch at 2260 MHz), but it is nice to enjoy both while also having separate stations - one can run some bigger data sets while the other does its own thing. Of course they can be networked together now but once I upgrade another system with a 7950X3D in a few months, I'll convert the free-up mobo into a file server - got the place rewired already with Cat 7 +8...

...back from the Andes to my neck of the woods...Mount Meager Massif (reasonably close by, been there in person). Even w/ restricted power limit and less than full vcore, I still get a near constant 120 fps at 4K max w/the 4090...on a big OLED, the whole thing is absolutely gorgeous.
