  1. Looking at your build list in your signature there, with 128GB of DDR3.......I'd almost lean more towards a Broadwell Xeon setup. You can score two 16 core / 32 thread CPU's for pretty cheap, and the dual Socket 2011 Supermicro boards aren't TOO expensive. It's what I decided to run in my server setup. Broadwell has halfway decent IPC, and upwards of 16c per CPU for multithread. If you're more after multithreaded uses though, honestly your choice in Opterons isn't bad. No offense meant, but the Intels are a little bit faster overall. It all just boils down to your budget, your intended uses, and well...whatever YOU want to buy. I was actually looking at the 6000 series Opterons when I built mine. I don't recall if it was a PCIe lane situation that drew me more towards the 2011 setup, or if it was IPC. I kind of needed both plenty of PCIe lanes AND the IPC (for game server usages). Had I gone more for media only uses like my server setup used to be for.....I might have gone the Opteron route. Server rig before this was an FX 8320 at 4.0GHz, and the one I had before that was a Xeon 1275 v2 (Ivy Bridge 3770 basically, on a desktop board). Obviously I made a big jump with the dual 2011, but even still I'm noticing limitations.
  2. Athlon x2 / Opteron dual core Toledos. Rocked a Manny x2 3800+ when I first joined enthusiast forums back in the day, was able to get 2.5GHz stable out of it and 2.97GHz on a suicide run out of it. Swapped to an Opteron 165, got 3 stable and nearly 3.4GHz on a suicide run. I was beating Core 2 Duos and even Core 2 Quads on some benchmarks with the setup. Gaming, I was quite literally right there with the Intel setups, and even Phenom II setups. I was still on my Opteron 165 when most of the forums had 1090T's and 1100T's (or Q9550's / i7 920's). Wasn't until the Core series from Intel came out that I really felt the urge to upgrade, bit that bullet with second gen 2500k. Socket 939 is where my absolute love is at. Very first generation of x64 processors, and also the very first actual dual cores. I mean they were SOOO good AMD used the same exact CPU's across 3 different sockets and generations. Socket 754 with single channel DDR and AGP (single core parts though), Socket 939 with the dual cores and dual ch RAM, and then later on AM2 with dual ch RAM and DDR2 over DDR. But to be perfectly honest, I have a fondness for every generation. They've ALL had their perks and weaknesses.
  3. I believe I switched the motherboard out for a 990FX board, and that fixed it. The CPU is rock solid stable at 4.1GHz CPU and 3.0GHz CPU-NB clocks. RAM is at DDR3-1750 at 8-9-8-24-2T I believe. Been a while since I pulled this machine off the shelf to play with since its done. I think I'm still missing a sound card to be 110% done with it, but its done enough as is.
  4. That particular Opteron chip is going to be basically a Bulldozer or Piledriver 8 core under the hood. It depends on your motherboard, most of the server boards really don't allow overclocking. I'm leaning more towards Bulldozer, and the 6000 series being Piledriver, but I'd have to really sit down and compare them again lol. You mentioned SetFSB, you can try that out. I wouldn't expect to get much higher than like 210-215 FSB with it though before you start having issues. Like others have mentioned, when you use software to overclock the FSB on these, it raises everything with it including SATA, PCIe, RAM, everything. With no way to lock the chipset out of the equation, you're not going to get TOOO terribly far. Not saying its impossible, I used to get 4.5GHz out of my Celeron 352 waaaay back in the day using Clockgen (like SetFSB). Helped me get the #9 spot world record on hwbot for Opteron 165's back in the day too. But yeah, I think software is probably going to be about your best bet for overclocking. Otherwise, just enjoy them for what they are I guess. The 16 core Opterons you're looking at are most definitely Piledriver based being released in 2012, the Opteron 6386 SE's. Again, those aren't unlocked so your only option again would be using FSB to overclock them. Pretty rad setup for an FX era build if I must be honest. I'm really pleased with my FX 8350 still in 2022, I couldn't imagine having double the cores available. Unless you specifically are requiring that particular build, I'd honestly look towards maybe some Broadwell era Xeons instead of the FX if you're after something with higher IPC but still a server type board. It really depends on your usages here though too. A desktop setup might be better suited. Hard to say.
  5. ........And this right here is EXACTLY why Youtube is banned off my smart TV's and my phone devices. If I can't block all the incredibly intrusive ads, I'm not watching. I tried, one time, recently to watch an episode of my beloved Mighty Car Mods, and I swear it was like every 15 seconds an ad just had to pop in and interrupt what the guys were saying. I might be exaggerating a bit, however I seriously did lose all sense of what the show was even talking about because of the ads. I had no clue this apk even existed! I might give it a look and archive it locally before it disappears entirely.
  6. Not saying that I actually LIKE the tech, but it is useful. I can manage "Ultra" in Cyberpunk 2077 on my sig rig at 5120x1440 if I use FSR on Performance mode. Otherwise I can barely squeak by on "low" settings with FSR disabled. Both options look like poo though. It does seem like Nvidia is slightly ahead in this endeavor right now with their DLSS though, image quality seems to be much better over FSR. Regardless of "future tech" purposes with this technology, its useful as is to get playable frames on modern games with budget friendly GPU's in today's GPU market.
  7. I know we try to keep politics out of discussions here, but mate.....this was spot on and worth the share, thank you. My heart, prayers, and love goes out to ALL of the people involved in this conflict, Ukrainians and Russians alike. I agree whole heartedly that its not the people that are involved in this, but instead its the governments. I've never had a Russian treat me horribly, I've never had a Ukrainian treat me horribly, so I have absolutely no problems with either. All I can say, is I just hope that Putin and Zelensky figure out this mess on their own, and without further loss of life of the citizens. I kind of understand both sides of the arguments, and both of them have valid complaints, assuming its not all just propaganda, and that right there is the problem. It seems to me, more like its an information war over a traditional type of war effort. I usually try my hardest to understand both sides of an argument before making my decision or take my side, and tbh.....with this conflict its very difficult to understand both sides when there's so much propaganda. -_- On one hand, I feel Putin overstepped bigly here with the invasion. On the other, he claims that Ukraine was doing some really really bad things right there along the border between them. So who's right? They always say that history is written by the winners, so I guess we'll see in the future? I just hope that this gets over with soon enough, and without further damage to the people themselves. Putin and Zelensky both can go screw off in the woods for all I care. I don't really care at all about puppets. I'm happy to hear that Yuri and his family is currently safe and doing well. I will keep him and his family in my thoughts, as well as everybody else that's affected directly by this conflict. Maybe if we send enough good vibes that way, maybe it'll help. Been doing so every day since this started, and I'll continue to do so till its over.
  8. Okay so....... Time is obviously not my friend right now with home schooling kiddo..... -_- I have the "newest" Socket A rig out again and I've been trying my hardest to get it to turn on and work, and I'm just not having any luck. I think, THINK its these molex Y splitters I'm using, I think one or two of the molex leads just popped the pins out or something when I hooked them up. Sometimes it POST's, sometimes it doesn't. When it DOES POST, only the ZIP250 drive is showing up in BIOS.....but I have a total of 4 IDE drives connected. So something is clearly wrong here. I think this evening I'll take the rear side panel back off and wiggle the molex Y splitters around a bit and see if I can get more life out of it. It's built. It's ready to install.....if only it'd find all of its stupid drives, and POST reliably. -_- Just figured I'd let you guys know I haven't stopped, just slowed waaaaaaay down because of the influx in home schooling needs for my kiddo. EDIT: Aaaaaaaand its put back up on the shelf. Still cannot get it to POST reliably, nor recognize the drives connected to it. -_-
  9. Why do I see a return of these horrible things in the near future? Amazon.com WWW.AMAZON.COM
  10. I'm still using a 25+ year old hotmail email address that I setup using 28.8k dial up on Netzero years and years ago. Could I use an email address that's not spammed every 5 seconds? Sure. Will I? Probably not....... I think I still have a different forum's email address too, and I haven't even opened that one in probably 10 years.

    Homeowners?

I think so as well. I'm not looking at overpriced $300-500k homes though either. I'm trying to find a used probably double wide on a few acres. So long as I'm spending at or under $200k, it's going to stay affordable for me to pay for it for well into the foreseeable future, and the price of the land itself should raise in value long term. Yeah, my $200k house might drop to $50k in a worst case bubble pop scenario. However I also don't see how you can put a price on full on freedom from the rental grinch. Besides, in a "normal" financial situation, those properties would actually still be worth between $100-150k, so if the markets just simply correct themselves, I won't be overspending too terribly much either. I'll be staying long term, like very long term, so overall it'd actually end up being LESS monthly cost for me than renting as is right now. If this guy I sent the letter to doesn't respond or whatever, then so be it. I was actually kind of waiting for the crash before seriously looking to buy anyway. It's just THIS house, is seriously just about perfect in almost every way. Not too big, not too small. Both the house and the land. Right next to family. Right next to a good school for kiddo. I'd save money compared to renting as is right now. One day I could build a racetrack and drag a couple beater cars home, and nobody can stop me........things like that. I have put a lot of thought into all of this already, and I agree right now is a terrible time to be looking to buy a home.
  12. Yes, definitely if the videos are staying on most pages, at the bottom is less intrusive. It also gives somebody a neat place to go next if they're done reading a thread.
  13. Any chance you can include embedded videos from Youtube or others? Curious because I made those couple of review videos for my amplifier, but uploaded them to YT. However they were pretty much strictly just for here since I'm not a youtuber lol. I just uploaded there because its easy and familiar. Also, I think UltraMega pointed this out maybe above? But the videos do kind of get in the way when looking at forum pages. It's nice to see that they're there, but when I'm reading about the CPUz competition, or one of the news articles or something, they're kind of in the way. I didn't know we HAD a videos section here till today, so again....it is nice to see we have that option here at least!

    Homeowners?

In case anyone is following along.....I'll go ahead and update...... I wrote the owner a letter today, going to mail it off tomorrow. Apparently since its "pre-foreclosure" the home owner can still make it right with the bank and keep it, OR sell it at this point since the bank hasn't siezed it....... yet. I wrote him / her, letting them know I was interested if they were interested in selling, and that I wasn't a house flipper, I wanted it to live in because my family is very close by and I'd really enjoy the house and property. So.....we'll see if I hear back from them next week or not. It's going in the mail first thing tomorrow. In the meantime, my credit isn't QUITE where it needs to be to get an FHA loan, however its really REALLY close. 5 points close. So, with my payments to my credit next payday, that SHOULD bump me up over that borderline mark, but we'll see. The foreclosure on that property states they owe around $67k. If I have to deal with the owner to actually buy it, I doubt they'll let it go for what they owe......but I might score it for less than its worth at least. According to various pages and similar listings nearby, it should be realistically worth right around 200k, and that's about the top of my budget range. Soooo even if they're asking a realistic / fair price on it, I "should" still be able to get it, if they're willing to sell that is. So, not giving up hope just yet!
  15. Well here's some more punishment. Good thing you didn't add that one yet. I found out 4.35GHz is seemingly stable on my chip! That should help my dinky Ryzen 5 3600 come out a LITTLE bit ahead of where it was originally with PBO at stock! EDIT: Yup, if I did my math right, I should be right under the two 2700x's on the list, and JUST BARELY trailing that Ryzen 5600 with a total score of 4921.8.
  16. I'll go ahead and make Storm-Chaser do some extra work too, why not? 4.3GHz all core overclock applied, RAM and IF still at 1867 on a 1:1 ratio. Just did manual multiplier and voltage instead of PBO. Seems like I'm getting decent improvements overall here at 4.3GHz.

    Homeowners?

Just drove by the house tonight. Somebody with deep pockets is looking at it too. I get the feeling it's a flipper. Guess I'm not getting a house like this. My realtor said she'll drive out there tomorrow, but that doesn't help if someone else is already on it. Ugh.

    Homeowners?

Oh I've already started credit "repair", I just derped and kinda spent too much of it. $450 card and paypal credit (ebay addiction screwed me on that one ). If I pay both of those off, which is easy peasy, I noticed my score boosts immediately up to like 680-700 on my credit karma. Talked to my realtor today, and she's not entirely hopeful about that house, seeing as its in "preforclosure", which apparently just simply means the home owner is 30 days delinquent. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled on it. Realtor said she's going to send them a letter with her business card to see if they're interested in selling it to me, so we'll see. I guess she's going to continue looking for me to see if she can find my dream home. I don't care that much, running water, electricity, and a functional roof is all I really require....and land, I want a few acres.

    Homeowners?

Yeah I'm going to be calling my realtor here in about 20 minutes. The price absolutely IS too good to be true, and I'm sure its probably a mistake or something. There's no way I could get that lucky lol. However, for $67k, its worth a shot to look at anyway. The land itself is worth approximately the $67k all on its own. My parent's quite literally JUST bought 4 acres a 0.5 mile away for $150k, bare land. This is 3 acres for 67k with a double wide already on the property. I'm not entirely sure yet about the property, but it looks like an old junk collector had the property previously as there's like 20 cars parked on the property on google satellite images. My guess is that the previous owner ran into money problems, they started selling their cars (I saw empty spots on the satellite images), and had problems paying their mortgage so they took it over. That's my guess.....but again, I don't know till I contact my realtor. @BWG, yeah I'll hit you up on discord or steam here in a bit if you're online!
  20. I know its not tech related, but I'm sure at least SOME of you folks are probably home owners. Anybody here happen to know anything about buying HUD pre-foreclosed homes? I found a STEAL of a deal on a 2.5 acre property. 3br house on the lot. Looks to be a farm type property, I see what looks like a horse corral and fencing in the satellite pictures. I'm just curious what all things I need to be asking, and what all steps I should be taking here. I've contacted my realtor, she wants to get me pre-approved first, but I have a feeling I'm likely going to need a co-signer first. Not sure. But guys, its a $67k house, 1440 sq ft, on 2.5 acres........I'm sure I can find a way to get that kind of a loan somewhere. Apparently it last sold for $149k in 2016 and is currently valued at $221k. So really, a loan would be money in the bank to any banks that'd finance it. Shoot, I could pay that off in 5 years time no problem! The only hangup is going to be my credit, its not the greatest. -_- Ex wife problems. Sorry, just excited but also trying not to get my hopes up too high lol.
  21. Outside my budget range big time, but wow. AMD just keeps stepping it up with their CPU's. This would be killer for server usages, assuming you can get enough PCIe lanes.
  22. I'm torn. On one hand, I dislike Nvidia because of their monopolistic tactics they've used. I dislike that they're ALWAYS closed source (Gsync, PhysX, etc). I dislike that they pay game developers to optimize JUST for their equipment at times. Lots of things I dislike about them. So in a way, I almost feel like like this is just absolutely hilarious. But at the same time, this is horrible for their customers, and especially for people naive enough to fall for the malware.
  23. My opinion? Both sides are wrong in this. War is bad. But its equally bad purposely provoking a world power too. What do you think is going to happen if you keep poking a sleeping bear? I think each country needs to keep to themselves, including our own countries respectively. If you can't play nicely, don't play. Russia meant business when they said they didn't want NATO so close to them. That needs to be respected. Ukraine means business when they say they don't want to be a part of Russia. Fine. I'm sure we could've reached a safe middle ground there had things gone differently. Obviously political here, but yeah our own country (the US) is in absolutely NO PLACE to be dictating what another country is doing. That goes with our tech sectors too. We rely too heavily on other countries in current times to have any say in what they do. We shouldn't be telling other countries what to do anyway. I don't get why we can't just all get along like we were just 2 years ago. -_-
