Picture borrowed from google, will be replaced asap

For a while I've been the owner of a Corsair Obsidian 1000D case.
It was the idea that this monster was going to house my main system, an AMD 3950x paired with 2 3090's in NVLink with water cooling. Finding a board with the proper spacing for an EVGA NVLink bridge is fun or very expensive, so I ditched that plan a while back. I could have used a Quadro NVLink bridge, but that was a big step as an EVGA fanboy. The case moved to the side and disappeared under a pile of boxes from other projects and the mess my regained interest in benchmarking (HWBOT) creates. After some applied pressure by @Avacado and @J7SC_Orion I decided it was time to dig up this case from under the mess and start working on it.

Plans for this system:
This is going to be a dual loop water cooled benchmark and fun system.

Hardware (subject to change):

CPU: Intel i9 12900KF

Mainboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero

Memory: 32GB G.Skill DDR5 Trident Z5 6400Mhz CL32

PSU: Corsair AX1600i
Storage: Samsung 980Pro 1TB
GPU: somewhere between a GTX580 and a 3090 (pair?)

CPU loop (don't mention overkill on EHW!):

2x Alphacool 480/45 xflow rad

1x Alphacool 420/45 rad

BP fittings

PrimoChill PrimoFlex Advanced LRT 19/13mm black tubing

AquaComputer Ultitube D5 150

16x Corsair ML120 RGB

6x Corsair ML140 RGB

Watercool Heatkiller IV w/ Socket 1700 Backplate and conversion kit

GPU loop (TBD):

External radiator on a stand

AquaComputer D5

Reservoir

BP fittings

Mayhems Ultra Clear 19/13mm tubing

Koolance QD4's

Update 1: Water cooling gear.
Update 2: Installing some of the hardware.

Most of the parts are already here.

Only the external GPU radiator is something I need to figure out, but I'm not in a hurry.

I started with the conversion from AM4 to Socket 1700:

The most time consuming thing all day, this little fella.

20220221_125005_resized.thumb.jpg.4500c9ca472a34675bd7adb6005decbb.jpg

Temporary mockup, figuring out where everything goes.
Sadly I wont be using the EKWB 240 reservoir, that would have worked great with the GPU's included in the loop but now it just messes with the loop order and tubing.

20220221_151740_resized.thumb.jpg.6c8c953849c3d4ed5eca2b776014e868.jpg

A tube will connect the rear fitting on the top 420 rad to the front radiator shown here:

20220221_151206_resized.thumb.jpg.c3bb38d83300444bae0b27656de2449f.jpg

16 ML120 fans, RGB cable nightmare 😂

20220221_151336_resized.thumb.jpg.e526adc8dc3d5802d5f4e9c9b4ad704a.jpg20220221_151421_resized.thumb.jpg.00f4b88745c3aa2395ca807e1e10d438.jpg

The hole spacing on the bracket below the pump works pretty good, just enough room to fit a nut on the threads so I need some black plastic washers to fill the gap.

20220221_152040_resized.thumb.jpg.5f28fea9ee05cf9a1b6c7b04219c1eb0.jpg

That's it for now 🙂

@Bastiaan_NL So, 7,830,000mm³ of radiator for just the CPU, "Big Boy" tubing, and a power supply that will trip a 15-amp circuit breaker if your electrician cut any corners.  Fun times! 🤩

BTW, that is some of the fastest rated DDR5 I have seen out in the wild, but I have not been following that market closely.

It's a sweet case for sure, just a bit heavy. I checked out the HAF 700 EVO, that's an awesome case too!

Like I said, we don't use the expression 'overkill' here but it kinda is..

The radiators were already in the case as I was planning to go dual GPU and a CPU in one loop. If I remove the 420 rad it'll look empty 😂

As for the breaker situation, we use 16 amp 240V here so I'm pretty safe!

The memory is crazy, just being able to buy something this fast and without even touching it... At some point I'll see where I(we) can take it, I bet it could go higher.

Yes, I realized after submitting my original reply that you would likely be on European rather than USA electrical standards.  That power supply is right on the limit of what 99% of US residential wiring is configured to handle.  Glad to hear you will have no such difficulties 😎.

👏 @Bastiaan_NL - absolutely love it 😍 and hoping it ends up with the 2x 3090s !

As you know, I prefer big cases... I once stuffed 4x air-cooled NVidia 600 series and an eATX mobo into a regular Antec A300 case...shall we say it had 'slight air-flow and cooling problems'...ever since then, I see the wisdom of going big or going home, ie. TT Core P series, Corsair Obsidian 1000D, HAF 700 EVO & Co. You might want to set a whole afternoon aside though for all the fan and RGB wiring 😁

I'm really looking forward to good pictorials on this build !

It's one of the things I love about being here. But then there are a lot of things over there I wish I had, like cheap electricity instead of the €0.275 I pay per kWh 😞

I hope I can get the 3090's running. I gave it a try a few days ago but I couldn't get it working for some reason. Now there are always some issues if you try something that's a bit unusual, so we'll see what's wrong soon.
The biggest issue is slot spacing, with a Quadro NVLink bridge I could get it working though.

I like big cases too, both for cooling reasons and just easy access.
As for the RGB stuff, I think I'll need to spread it out over a few days to stay sane 😂

Little update, installing some of the hardware.

Shiny Heatkiller IV, I polished/lapped this one for the 3950x a while back:

And installed on the board with the true brass fittings 😍

The board installed in the case, bit of a wire mess (wait until you see the back 😂)

20220221_215816.thumb.jpg.32cee3c7ea0097d7bcf761cbe7d431d4.jpg

The weight of this case is already extreme, but adding parts like this doesn't make it any better. (5.85lb)
It's almost impossible to pick up the case from the pooltable I'm working on, so it'll be a challenge once I have to move it to the office..

One of your image 'edits' of those talking horses pops up in my head 😂

Regarding the NVLink bridge, I've seen and bookmarked that one (I think you were the one mentioning it a while back). It's either that or the quadro one, though a flexible one would be better with some slack to move the cards where I want.

That's a very nice hardware list you have there 😃 Love the look of the heatkiller gear. You going with heatkiller blocks on the 3090's too?

Thanks 😄
I really wanted HK blocks on the 3090's and I've had some contact with them but they were so slow releasing them that I decided to go with EKWB full cover blocks and active backplates even though all the trouble they had. Turned out EKWB updated the plating proces and the quality has been better since that.

Those blocks have been in my posession for a while now, and I noticed Watercool.de has the FTW3 blocks available now though without active backplates IIRC.

Very nice ! ...that's going to be a weighty beast with 2x w-cooled 3090s, related rads  etc., never mind the PSU 😅   .. some of my Ravens are over 100 pds all in, and I should probably rename them Albatross.

...Yeah, on the 3 slot NVL bridge from Elmor, I had sent you a PM before  already- did you get one then ? Currently, they seem to be 'sold out' but will probably come back into stock again.
