What sub $2k gpu to buy?

here at the end of the month ill be able to upgrade from my 1080ti, I was looking at a 3080ti but i dont know if i really want to spend that much.

 

im currently on a 10900k, 32gb 3600mhz, silverstone st-1000, Dell S2716DG

 

i'd like a gpu that has a full cover block available too, what do y'all think?

Well, sub-$2K the best you can really get is a 3070Ti. You might be able to find a 3080.

Considering you're at 2560x1440 @ 144Hz with G sync / Freesync (I think they both work on GSync screens right?).......

 

I'd almost vote to just hold onto your 1080Ti a little longer.  It's still a very very decent card for 1440p.  Not great, but decent.

 

However if you want to keep absolutely pegged at that 144 FPS range for your screen, a 6800XT / 6900XT wouldn't be a bad way to go either if RT capabilities being lacking doesn't bother you.  Otherwise, yeah seems like a 3070ti / 3080 would be in range too.  But even that will struggle with RT enabled on some titles.  Personally, I just can't stomach it when we used to be able to get this kind of performance around $300-500 just a few very short years ago.  Being on a 5700XT myself though, I understand why you'd want to scratch that upgrade itch though.

 

Both options are solid.  The higher AMD cards tend to have more VRAM, the Nvidia cards tend to do a little better at RT.  If you do score a new GPU, well congratulations....enjoy it.  Don't forget to let us know what you picked up in the post your last purchase thread!  (or here lol)

What are the prices in your area?

 

6900XT can be had for sub $1500 and 3080's should be around $1200 now give or take depending on model. 3070 Ti now sub $1k here.

the only reason i'd sway against amd would be folding production. price per ppd just aint there, I'd also love to find another evga x79 dark, and throw a bunch of gpus at it.

Agreed. If you are a folder then Nvidia still gives you the best PPD. I would also argue that in general, Nvidia drivers have far wider support for production applications, if you were ever using your GPU for anything hardware accelerated.  Another key question, what is your motivation for upgrading ? Other than increased PPD ?

I wanna get closer to 144hz, im hovering around 50-70 in games I play

Understood, have you considered the 20 Series, like the 2070/2080Ti ? Cheaper and will likely hit your goals of FPS @144hz , granted that a 30 series gets you more PPD, but it all comes down to what is more important to you at this point.

upgraded from a 10900K/1080 Ti to a 10900K/3080 Ti  back in January and have been happy with it. 

 

just get a 3x 8-pin version if you plan on playing with the XOC BIOS.

I've got an open box EVGA 2080ti XC GAMING that I could probably let go to the right person at a reasonable price (~$1000 plus insured shipping to the lower 48 for the card and the WaterCool Heatkiller waterblock for it). It's been more than three years since I bought the card so the warranty is up on it, but I could plug it in and make sure it works before shipping it out.   

 

Please note that I prefer not to sell it to someone who plans to turn it around and scalp it for a profit. I also won't sell it to someone who doesn't come recommended by someone else here.  No ifs, ands, or butts about that.

 

If there's an interest for it I'll work up an official for sale post for it.

I went from a 1080Ti to an RX 6800 and I have been extremely happy with it. I do wish I had gotten the RX 6800 XT but supply was limited at the time.
