I bough 2x8gb ddr3 2400 gskill used from someone and for some reason it boot at 2x400mhz (800) mhz and i can't even boot at 1066 1.65v cl10-12-12.

Anyone ever got degradded ram?

Motherboard is a m5a99fx evo with a fx 6100.

Sure, degraded ram can happen but it looks like that board only supports ram speeds up to 1866mhz anyway.

Try one stick at a time and see why happens. 16GBs is a lot for a system like that.

yeah 2400 wasnt exactly "compatible" with many boards back then, 1600 wouldve probably been the best bet. you may need a bios update if the ram isnt registering speeds proper though

Forgot it 4x4gb not 2x8gb.

Tried 2x4gb without any improvement will retry with just 1.

Will check for a bios update but still strange that it won't even boot with manual timing.

RAM is one of those things that traditionally it either works or it doesn't.  At the very least I'd expect it to work, but crash at higher speeds.  The fact that it doesn't work at all (apparently?) at even DDR3-1066 speeds (533MHz), that's definitely a problem.  I agree with PCSarge, kinda sounds more like an incompatibility with the motherboard than faulty RAM, especially when you're trying less and less sticks to no avail.

Keep in mind too, you're NEVER going to see probably even DDR3-1866 with 4 sticks with an FX CPU.  You'll be LUCKY to see 800MHz (DDR3-1600) with the IMC of that CPU.

It's also possible your IMC is damaged on the CPU.  I'd lean towards that over the RAM being faulty honestly as I've killed MANY MANY an IMC on a CPU.

That could be the issue. Did not think about the imc being into the cpu like intel.

Got other cpu around i will try. This cpu saw 1.62v on air so maybe he not that happy but he ran 1333 before 2x2gb

It honestly really sounds more like the motherboard just isn't compatible with those sticks to me.  If you have another DDR3 system laying around, I'd give them a go in another board first.  If you don't, try other RAM sticks again with the FX and see about updating BIOS perhaps.  Maybe there was a compatibility patch.

My friend as 2gen fx with a gigabyte mobo will ask him to try them 🙂

Maybe the fact am running first gen fx is an issue too.

Nah, the CPU isn't the problem unless the IMC has problems.  I have a Phenom II that's running DDR3-1866 just fine (officially supports 1066 I believe?).  The FX first generation should absolutely handle at the very least 1333 I'd imagine just fine completely bone stock.  People were running 1600+ on those fine too.

Will probably try the other board today. Il report back how it go. I have to run memok to boot at 800mhz..

Meanwhile am gonna switch back to my 2x2gb and try to overclock them so i can bench with a realistic ram speed :wheee:

Tested 1 ram stick did not even want too boot with memok. Then tried with another one in the same slot and just ran 800mhz.

Now my friend just tested on is gigabyte 970a  and no boot at all.

Those ramstick  probably overheated or something it strange maybe a surge damage.

Those ram probably overheated or something it strange.

It's certainly not impossible the sticks are bad.  I was only leaning the way I was because DDR3-2400 is most definitely NOT supported by all motherboards.  If there's no JEDEC standard speeds programmed to the sticks, like 1600 or 1333, then the system probably has absolutely no clue what to do with those 2400 sticks.  Then again, you could be right that they were abused.  Hard to say without a full workshop worth of goodies to troubleshoot really. 🙂

Gigabyte motherboards of that era weren't too terribly bad on memory compatibility, even if the boards themselves weren't great.  So yeah, its starting to sound more like the sticks might actually be at fault.

Rip at least i haven't paid that much.  Cpu-z do show some jedec setting that should boot.

I tried 1.65v 1066 without success.

I could try an rma it lifetime warantly but i feel cheap about it since i don't know what happenend.

You know, to be honest it wouldn't hurt to give them a call and ask nicely (or nicely write an email).  Worst they can do is say no.  Super fast DDR3 is hard to come by, and I'm sure they know that.  Honestly, for an FX build, I'd be happy with 1866 if you can find some.  You're going to be hard pressed to even get 1866 stable on those IMC's anyway.  Some people got like 2000-2133, but I couldn't tell ya how.  My 8350 can't even do 1900.

Yea did that once with Msi i was like i somewhat killed it myself but not sure and they rmaed the mobo 😀 i love Msi since.

I know that the fx cpu are not going to run high memory clock but i just wanted the memory stick because i had the same set on my 4790k more freedom with setting too.  Anyways that rigs is just for playing around then will probably store it somewhere in a box as my overclocking training tool for noob.  And i want to break 6ghz :wheee:

Thank you everyone for the help 😀

I was looking at some of my old FX-4100 benchmarks and I was running 4x4GB of DDR3-1600 at 2000MT/s on an 890FX board. The trick was juicing the CPU-NB to 1.4v. Also CPU was running 5.2GHz at 1.65v, CPU-NB at 3GHz, HTLINK at 2.6GHz. Despite all if that massive overclocking, the CPU was still slower than an Athlon 860K I tested at stock 🤣 but hey all of the FM2 CPUs I tested could all run 2400MT/s RAM.

Actually that's not QUITE true today in 2022.  Yeah, the FX series were a letdown on release day.  However with the way EVERYTHING is so multithreaded now, the FX series CPU's actually perform better now than they did on release somehow.  My FX 8350 is smoother to use than my old 3770k was in modern times.  Even though the 3770k was faster on release, its been gimped since then due to security patches.  The FX didn't have those vulnerabilities, and the multi-chiplet design just so happens to function fantastically with modern systems since all the threads now.

I cannot say the same about first gen "Bulldozer", but I'd imagine its a similar story.  The above is true for the Piledriver systems though, at least in my experience.

I tested my 6100 with my 6800xt. Seemed to run great on 4gb ram and caching to my ssd . Ran gta v 4k maxed out at like 40 fps.

I know the integer performance was ways better vs intel.

But a 8 core e5 2689 is like 30$ now and it a better cpu 😀

Just read through this, great discussion :). When RAM doesn't work as expected...I feel the pain. Sometimes troubleshooting it is a right PITA.

Booted at 4.8 with 1.65v and 1.61 vdrop load on r15 with my 2x2gb 1600.

Work 7/7 days a week so i dont even have enough time to overclock for fun lol.

Gonna try to rma the ram then after that push all my cpu to death and maybe order 2-3 8300 at 55$ cad on aliexpress.

Those old Steamroller and Piledriver CPUs are very hard to destroy. I used to bench said FX-4100 at 1.75v on a Hyper-212+ and run it at over 1.65v for daily OC. I was intending to OC it do death because I hated that it was such a weak CPU but it would never die. I had similar experiences with AM2/3 CPUs just tanking voltages too. I remember a Phenom II 1090T that I ran at 1.6v for over a year then sold it to @neurotix and he folded on it at 1.65v for 2 more years before he went Haswell. I've degraded Intel CPUs by breathing on them hard I swear they are not built as tough.
