Hey guys,

Just out of interest, when you replace the lubricant inside a fan that's become a little tired, what do you guys usually go for ?

Thanks,

I use Finish Line Dry. It's designed for bicycle chains instead of electronics so I don't know if I can recommend it. I've not had problems so 🤷

I have literally used cooking oil before, I think it was olive oil. Just a tiny dab to supplement what's still there. If you don't have anything else on hand, pretty much any kind of oil will be good enough.

I've been using Triflow with PTFE because I had it, but idk if it's the best choice, it's very light oil. Maybe better to use something heavier like engine oil.

I will take a look at that, expensive but looks like a decent product.

Lastly....trust you guys to ruin a good thing lol. As soon as I posted this topic and looked at the title, I figured the smutty minds would cone out of the wood work 😛

  • 2 weeks later...

Bit of an update... I have an AC powered 120mm 2600RPM axial fan that runs pretty much 24/7. I took it apart a few days ago and lubed both ball bearings with Triflow, after I noticed that the bearings were sounding a bit rough when I would turn it off and let it coast to a stop. After a few days of running, the "rough" sound has gotten worse. It still spins very freely, and the hub seems cooler than before (less friction), but the light grease that came on the bearings definitely made it run quieter. 😬

Fortunately those Fushi 693 bearings come pre-greased, so If it gets worse, I'll just replace them with new ones.

I received my Triflow the other day, Ironically the fans I was looking to lubricate are close housed...so you cant. Oh well, at least I have some good stuff for other fans that can be serviced.

I use

ZEP 45 AERO

Excellent quality penetrating lubricant with low VOC contents.

or

ZEP 45 DUAL FORCE

Excellent quality penetrating lubricant with low VOC contents.

Best penetrant lubricant I know of.

It's also an excellent penetrating oil with PTFE as primary lubricant as oils vapor off.

It's penetrant unlocks / frees up everything and moves PTFE in so it keeps on lubricating.

And it has no chlorinated solvent in it.

I spray some into something like a 14 oz can with cloth over top so I can collect the oils and PTFE in liquid form and put that into a small needle oiler and put a drop into fan.

Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for 30ml Clear Rosin Needle Dispenser Bottle for Glues Solder Flux Past + 11 Needles at the best online prices at eBay! Free delivery for many...

This kind of setup works great!  A can lasts me many years.
