What kind of movie storage you use?

Well am kinda stuck currently am someone who like to be bullet proof data wise for my movie collection.

I was running a 8tb drive plex and leaving one 8tb on a shelf with a copy of the same data. And updating both when i have new stuff.

 

I just rented a cloud storage for 5tb for 15$ a month in germany and am in canada. FTP transfer is deadly slow but it seem to work transfering 1.6tb currently for the past few days and got like 50h left.

 

Do you think i should keep having 2 hard drive backup.

Or compress my stuff. Data is under 4tb currently on those 8tb. I can probably drop it to 2tb with some work. And keep using the cloud as an external backup.

 

Not too sure. External seem to be the best in case of a fire.

Personally I think $15 a month for something that slow and far away is a waste. Having two physical backups of data is plenty. You should however not store both physical backup's in the same location (House fire/Theft).

It really is personal preference but my data continuity is as follows:

 

RAID 1 Mirror (Inside TrueNas Scale Server) 

Onsite External NAS (Server Backup Nightly)

Offsite Cloud Sync (Server Sync Nightly)

 

My data is likely the most precious thing I own, so I am fairly careful with it. Granted, I already have a subscription to Google Workspace which by extension is 10TB in size and more than enough to space for me to upload to. That being said, for efficiency only the most important data I have gets offloaded into my cloud backup. No point in storing EVERYTHING up there. 

 

Literally the only reason I have Offsite backups to the cloud is in case of the even of fire or some other form of catastrophic destruction.

I have two Unraid servers at home in different rooms.

 

One is the Primary and has mostly flash storage and runs Plex.  On this server I have most of my media including downloaded shows/movies, 4k/8k demoes, rips of all our DVD's and BD's, and home videos and Photos.

 

The other is a secondary and has all spinning disks (mostly IronWolf drives at this point) and has a backup of all the media that can't be easily replaced.  So on the secondary I DON'T backup the 4k/8k demos, downloaded movies, and our DVD/BD backups since those are all easy to find again and instead I just keep a full Excel list of where I got all my media from and where it is stored.  I do backup all the downloaded shows since most of those I have gone through and painstakingly renamed and sorted and also re-ordered the audio and sub-title tracks and I don't want to have to do that again.

 

 

I then use Both OneDrive and Google Drive to backup all my home videos and photos, or the really hard to find movies/shows that I have and some handpicked 4k/8k demos for easy finding while on the go.

 

 

 

My Home Videos and Photos also get written to archive BD's twice a year.  In June I do a single disc of uncompressed files with just the new stuff since last June, then in December, I do a complete write with a compressed set of files sorted by 1 archive per year.  Then I give those BD's to my mom who lives a few hours away to store them with her picture albums.

Thank you all for the idea   Il fix my hard drive and copy my backup. I like the BD idea but am lazy. So will see if i can safely transfer my data over the cloud storage without issue for now. And will probably upgrade my drive and figure an external place to store HDD in case something happen after and cut the cloud thing. 

 

Transfering 1.6tb in 100h when i have over 3tb left is pretty exhausting

I just have mine stored on an SSD with no backups because I like to live dangerously. But I do also "only" have 26 movies ripped.

 

When I do get around to it, I am going to get a NAS running a few Seagate Ironwolfs (Ironwolves?) in I think RAID 5. Whichever RAID number gives you the maximum number of storage space on as few drives as possible while still having "backups".

My dream setup is 2 8tb ssd 1 in my car and 1 on the plex. So that ways am safe.

I don't have that much movie and i don't plan to have that much either i like old stuff so it pretty light.

Everything gets backed up to my server nightly and my server gets backed up to a couple of "external" drives using 5.25 to 3.5 Startech adapters + FreeFileSync. I usually don't backup to the external drives more than ~once a month but there's not too much I'd be super upset about losing. Anything that I can't lose is backed up Google Drive but it's not much.

I assume you are transferring over USB as that is slow, no wonder you are pulling your hair out lol.  I would suggest in the future to go networked

no backups, just a ton of drives(41), with a few parity. I can have 2-3 drives fail at the same time and be fine. not safe from fire/flood though

Am using an orico external dock with 5gbs connection over my usb 3.1 port.

But it seem to be network or latency mostly. But am like 50-75% of my upload speed limit anyways i can't have fiber here.

Just my basic 5 cent to the topic: synology nas 2 bay in mirror 2x8tb) satisfied  and works great as well as a media centre … as told basic simple kinda lost in the server/plex topics

I'm a bit lax with mine... the important stuff, like family movies, are saved to the cloud and on a flash drive on my key chain as well as being on 3 different PC's in the house.  The DVD rips, music and other replaceable stuff, I have on a 12TB drive in my main PC with a backup on my wifes HTPC.   Most of my stuff is just recorded off air though, so no big loss.

This is the sort of thing I consider a basic minimum for anyone who values their data. A NAS in a RAID 1 (mirrored) configuration, though I would always still recommend a backup of your main data storage. 

 

I guess it all comes down to people data lifestyle, some data is not "Important" and can stand a loss.

6TB WD Blue in my rig, as well as a 4TB and a WD Black 2TB.

 

Two 4TB external drives as backup (my total data stored in my rig is around 5.5TB).

 

8TB WD MyBook external drive I got recently that holds all my data, in the bottom of a fireproof safe. Though I imagine in a house fire the heat going through the metal of the safe would probably melt the plastic casing. The drive might be ok though.

 

Would/want to get another 8TB and have an offsite backup, but have no reliable people to hold on to it for me. I suppose I could rent a bank vault box.

 

Nothing in the cloud and don't use Plex anymore because of their privacy policy/paranoia. Since I run Linux and stream to Raspberry Pis, Linux treats everything as a file including the network so on the Pi end, it acts as if the files I'm playing are locally stored meaning no encode time at all and it does not hammer your CPU to encode like Plex does. The same thing can be achieved by using Windows networking and sharing folders, and then building a Pi and installing LibreElec. However, in Linux you can set Samba to only host on your subnet and be firewalled, on Windows you will see Virgin Media and other companies bots trying to access your share if you run netstat.

 

I heard a few years ago on OCN that people were buying and shucking 12TB WD Red surveillance system drives, and they were like $120 a pop. Trying to be frugal atm, but I'd love to get three of them.

 

And yes, backing up to USB hard drives is slow, but once you get everything you have on it, then you just need to add anything else you rip and it's not too bad.

Shucking drives is good for cheap storage but horrible for performance as they tend to use Shingle Magnetic Recording as it's cheaper to produce but its an inferior technique.

I love plex so i can share out of my network and have a good library system.

Never did think about bank vault. That could be an option. Would cost me the same as the cloud thing but i can drop a 20tb drive in there.

 

Drive price coming slowly down for sure. The best price/ratio currently i think are 16-18tb one.

I use p-cloud. I have their 10tb lifetime plan. And I have been pretty happy with it. But it was expensive. I use it for backup. But I can stream from it as well.

Everyone knows you need 3 save games to not get stuck!  J/k.  Personally I just buy NAS drives and have stuff I really care about copied between 2 drives.  I have yet to have a NAS drive fail, but I'm sure it could happen.  If I were running a server or had really sensitive information, I'd run raid 3 and do an offsite/offline data backup once a week.  Raid 3 allows information to be recovered if a drive goes down, and offline backup helps in the event of ransomware.  The problem with every day backups is that files can become corrupted and the corrupted file is copied over the backup.

 

I've only had 4 drives fail on me in my lifetime.  2 were over 20 years ago, before I used UPS systems, and 2 were intel SSDs, I don't buy intel storage anymore.
