Wait until they release their new EVGA E! prebuilt system. Some of us are guestimating it'd have to have a price tag upwards of $10K, if not more.

I've signed up for it, but I definitely won't be buying it.

$10K doesn't go very far anymore, not when you're buying TOTL. Just the MB, CPU and GPU with blocks for me is already at $4,400.

Won't argue with that. Can't wait to see what happens when nvidia releases their 4xxx series cards to market.

well... for better or worse I just paid for a 6900 xt... I found a new reference edition for only 40% over MSRP and my 2:30AM tired butt bid on it... no one else did... not sure if I messed up or not, but I really shouldn't be on ebay that early in the morning... At least I can still sell my 5700 XT for way over what I paid for it lol... will make up some of the cost... FYI, it was paid for with tax return money, turns out I filed my dependents wrong with my employer and too much money was being taken out... fixed that now

Expand

Haha I've been there... I'd buy a lot less stuff if ebay was unavailable from 10pm to 8am.

As for the taxes, it's better that than the alternative. When I got divorced I forgot to update my employer so I didn't have enough being taken out. Ended up owing a few grand at tax time.

Edit- I thought I was on the most recent page of the thread but just realized I replied to a comment from a couple weeks ago. Hopefully you have your card and it's treating you well 🙂

I'm glad people here still have the means to support "the pursuit of performance" or "pushing it to the limit". I for one am absolutely disgusted at the state of the PC hardware market. An $830 motherboard apparently is ok because there is a $2k motherboard out there. Oh yeah ok, guess $830 is cheap, great deal! Big yikes.

Forgive my rant, just my feeling right now.

hey, old comments deserve replies too 😁  Glad I didn't end up owing, definitely would rather be surprised the good way... As for the card, other than a self induced panic attack, all is going well... loving the performance of this thing even though it isn't a good overclocker, it does it's job.  I you want to know what happened, the saga can be found here: clicky

Nothing to forgive.  I think most of us who have dabbled in DIY PC for a decade or more feel the same way.  I don't think a $2K MB justifies the price of an $830 MB.  I was merely attempting to soften the blow with humor by pointing out how much more absurd other options can be currently.

It's why I spent my money on headphones and cars. $2000cad after tax got me my HD800S and I absolutely love them. The thing that I like about TOTL audio is that it never really expires or gets worse... only ever-so-slightly better things come along so I don't feel the constant need to upgrade based on a time-frame (eg: with computers, games getting slower, unable to play new games at high FPS/quality, etc).

The same goes for cars, each upgrade, mod, preventative maintenance, etc thing I do delivers so much more impact and satisfaction than computers for me. It was easy to justify computer parts/upgrades when you were looking at like $2-3k total for an entire high-end system but now that barely buys you a top-end GPU...

All humour aside re. what seems like (and often is) bizarre desktop-class mobo pricing, it is not that cars have gotten cheaper, either - even used ones. Re. cars, we may very well see many more supply-chain issues  (for example, Toyota shuttered 19 plants in Japan 'for a bit' now because of some computer-hack related issues affecting a key supplier).  This will add to already existing inflationary pressures.

Mobo prices also have some legitimate reasons to become more expensive (ie. PCIe 4, 5, DDR5 all add to the cost) and there are also some '$800 desktop class' mobos that come with PCIe quad NVME add-in cards and dual integrated NICs up to 10GB which makes sense to buy in certain use-case circumstances. That said, just like with cars and many other manufactured products, moving 'upmarket' into the luxury segment is what many companies aim for, given the much higher profit margins in those segments. Mobos at $2k+, desktop GPUs at $3k+...and plenty of folks competing to get them...brave new world (> sarcasm).

Much like everything in this recession the World is going through the budget option has almost been eliminated for what seems like financial reasons and this has had an impact on shifting the entire line-up of products up a tier. My partner and I were shopping for a daily driver car (and her first car) and we really fell in love with the new Honda Fit/Jazz... but of course they aren't coming to North America anymore so we had to look at a Civic... but of course the base-model civic doesn't come in red (she was very insistent on this)... so we would have to upgrade to a Sport model to get red. So our initial idea of spending $20k after taxes on a car turned into $35k after taxes on a car... and with housing being as crazy as it is now we'd rather have that cash be liquid in-case the house of cards ever topple and we can get an opportunity to move out of a minuscule apartment and into even a small townhome.
