Yeah I am not in a big rush either, but my system can't really drive modern stuff at 1440p without turning everything down, so I am mostly playing older games at the moment. That said, I am not a launch buyer. Will see how things look in Feb-March next year.

Also interested to see how Micro Center will end up pricing Zen 3 as we have one here in Denver. I definitely got my 4790k way below its at the time MSRP back in 2014.

I have two withing about 45 minutes of me.  The next time I do a pc build i'm gonna go there and buy my parts.  I have never bought parts physically then went hom and built it.  Kinda want to do that.

I had a proejct in Cambridge MA, my hotel shared a parking lot with mocrocenter took so much control not to go bankrupt

There may be, as they haven't released architecture and technical details yet. Probably not, but I'd hazard a guess that PCIe 4 has something to do with it.

I would very much imagine that the PCIe 4 interface is the driver here. If they are using a method for quick interlink between an AMD CPU and the GPU with respects to something like infinity cache, then yeah makes full sense that for optimum performance you would need to take advantage of the extra bandwidth of PCIe 4, something which cannot happen with Intel as they are not even on PCIe 4 as of yet. Depending on how this shapes up, have an AMD/GPU combo could be very interesting indeed, would love to hear more on the technology as it could be a driving factor to get the 6900XT considering I am using a Ryzen CPU already.

15 hours ago, Sir Beregond said:

6900XT looks great at $999....compared to a $1500 card. Really this card should be $699 in my opinion. Sure...maybe $799. But let's get real. Only reason it is $1k is because the 3090 exists north of $1k. AMD is a business taking advantage of the current market price-points and playing to them, so it's hard to blame. But as a consumer, I'm just not thrilled about prices from either camp.

As for the 6800XT a slight undercut of an overpriced card is still in overpriced territory as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, hoping the benchmarks look good. I'm looking for the next card to drive my new PC for the next 5-ish years (current PC is turning 6 soon), so I am looking hard at the 6800XT/3080 tier (as much as I hate their pricing, sigh). We'll see if my next PC is a 5 year one or if we start advancing fast again, but with current pricing, not interested in upgrading every gen like I used to back in the day. Since I am planning to upgrade to Zen 3, gotta admit, the feature pairings with RX 6000 looks very compelling, so I am definitely leaning Radeon likely this round. But will wait for the benchmarks and see.

You got that right. AMD is a business like any other at the end of the day, as long as they are undercutting their competitor then the price will be set as appropriate. Lol lets be honest if Nvidia was selling the 3090 at $1K you can rest assured the 6800XT would be at your preferred $699 price point haha.

I have to say the big bucks to invest in marketing gimmicks paid off because a significant number of people associate ray tracing with NVIDIA. Not many look past this and realize this is just math and anyone can use it. Xe will have Ray Tracing and now AMD shows they have it too.

For the first attempt at real time ray tracing AMD hasn't done a bad job. We need to be fair and acknowledge that NVIDIA is on their second generation Ray Tracing design and they should have a bit of an advantage. I expect Intel's first iteration to be at a low level but I hope I am wrong.

I will be honest and admit that I always preferred Ruby to Nalu. I remember the days of getting a card with her on the cooler and how she looked with her dual swords when you'd install something from ATI.

These past years have been depressing in the tech industry and I cannot be happier to see competition in the GPU segment. As I have reached a point where I care about stability, support, and the ecosystem, I will probably pick my GPU based on these factors as well.

It is no surprise that NVIDIA will prepare a new Titan and some sharp TI cards when going down to 7nm TSMC.

I am still running a 1080p screen and come spring I aim to move on 4K. This will require a new system and I am very excited. Maybe Rocket Lake is competitive as well. Who knows, I look forward to a mobo like the APEX but for AMD chips.

If Sapphire makes a Vapor-X that kills everything, I might go AMD.

I can't wait :)

Based on everything I've seen; contingent on 3rd party reviews of course, I believe a 6800XT and 5800X/5900x are in my near purchasing future. I already run a 3900XT/1080 ti on the Asus Crosshair VIII x570, so they're both drop in upgrades.

This will be my main rig for at least 3 years, barring some revolutionary thing that catches my attention during that time frame.

I'm quite sure nVidia will respond in kind, with Ampere on 7nm TSMC, based on all the rumors floating around and it will be the outright top lineup again. But I've been trapped in the "I'll wait for something better that's coming" cycle one too many times and will just get what I can get now.

Agreed. I'll get whatever works for my needs early next year. I'm thinking 5800X/6800XT.

I am not expecting an Ampere refresh on TSMC 7nm until next summer at the earliest. Just speculation, but that's my guess.

Adult me can't help but feel nostalgic for those awesome box art/cooler stickers back in the day...even if a bit juvenile by adult me standards. There was just something cool about them. And I agree... Ruby > Nalu.

Wish the 6800XT was 599 but I'm a buyer at 649 (700 for AIB)

Now we know why Nvidia released 3xxx on Samsung 8nm and in such a rush. They knew what AMD had and needed a stopgap. I still think it's damaging to their brand to have done this. I probably won't buy for them for a decade now.

I just signed up for EVGAs queue for a 3080 ftw.  I know their performance is where I want.  When the 6800xt comes out it will be what I can get first.  The only thing that might sway me is if I go Ryzen.  I don't need a new CPU.  But if I decide to get one I'm going all red to take advantage of those new features.

I think Nvidia will sell every thing they manage to put out there. While it is damaging their brand image, I don't think it is doing enough damage to matter on that front...at least for now. If they start doing Intel level of blunders, I guess we'll see.

Very much this. Nvidia obviously had some insider info that RDNA2 was actually going to bring its game, otherwise I reckon the 3000 series would have waited longer than the typical 2 year cycle.

Yeah, realistically if RDNA2 ended up being nothing, I expect we'd have not seen anything from Nvidia earlier than Q1 2021. They clearly were not ready.

Wow. If reviews do end up corroborating these benchmarks, then what a return to performance competition for AMD. Even if they fall short a bit, still it's right up there with Nvidia top end. Last time this happened was what...2013 with the 290X?

Exciting times.

The GPU example he used gave an extra PL of up to 15% (300 W > 345W) with options for board partners to perhaps push a bit beyond, depending on their cooling solution(s)...personally, I hope Aorus will offer a factory full w-block version of the 6900 XT 'xtr'

Overall, 6900 XT(s) could be a nice addition for an all-AMD build project for 2021 ?  Still, I also like to see more news about the 7nm TSMC NV 3090(s). Either way, 2021 will be an interesting year to put a new system together

Nice, late 2020/2021 is going to be interesting, especially for AMD. I am building what will be my last DDR4/PCIe 4.0 Build, well I should say upgrading really. Have the 5950X secured, just now for the 6900XT. This will serve me nicely for a while. I won't upgrade again considering DDR5 is around the corner and the PCIe 6.0 specification is mostly done and has a scheduled release date of 2021, even though this can all change.

Yeah I'm leaning to a 6800XT with a 5900X. Was wanting the 5800X but I'm not thrilled about 8-core part at $450. Realistically would probably be fine with a 5600X, but wouldn't mind having extra oomph for the next 4-5 years before next upgrade.

You want something to last you during the upcoming tech transition period. Even when DDR5 and PCIe 6.0 tech is out, you will still have to wait out the techs immaturity as well as possibly prohibitive pricing.

Exactly. I think I'll just spring for the 5900X. 5950X is priced way higher than I would like, but I think I can cough up an extra $100 for the 5900X over the 5800X.

I'm going to do a 6800xt asap.  THen probably a 5900x upgrade early next year.  I'm technically on the EVGA waitlist for a ftw ultra but I may not pull the trigger even if it pops.

Google-Fu agrees with you though. Hoping it's not another Radeon VII situation (make 10 cards, sell out instantly, never restock) though. Hardware Unboxed's video made me skeptical.

Haha...I meant don't take my memory of what I thought I heard to the bank. ?

Oh these will sell out tomorrow no doubt. Will be interesting to see how the restock game plays out vs 3080.

I'm sure glad that I haven't run into any 4K limits whatsoever with my 2x factory w-cooled 2080 Tis - not because I don't like the new stuff / new builds, but because it affords me plenty of time (say, February '21) to pick and choose the best option w / o having to madly hit F5 for weeks on end only to have the pleasure to pay for a marginal clocker at inflated 'scarcity' prices...

When the time comes, I hope Nvidia has released its 7nm consumer versions (ie 3080 Ti, 3090, even Titan ?) and AMD's 6900 XT will be out there aplenty on the shelves
