I made a thread last night in the AMD general section about my builds, but.....

AMD K6 / Radeon 7000 era GPU
AMD K7 (Barton probably) / Radeon 9800 or whatever high end AGP

AMD K8 (939 Opteron) / Radeon 2900 ish (8800GTX performance)

Phenom Quad / HD4890 (I have this one)
Thuban x6 / HD7970 or 290x
FX 8 core / RX 580 or Vega (I have a couple RX 580's)

I'm wanting to not only experience computing as it was like back in those generations, but I ALSO want to see what all I can force older junk to run.  I'm daily using this Phenom quad / HD4890 right now with Win7 on it.  Mostly for fun, maybe for lols.  Probably will post benchmarks and junk.  I dunno, just giving myself something cheap to do lol.

What was your first CPU? Are you doing this for nostalgia or curiosity?

I actually just took some super old GPUs to an ewaste place last week. You ever try going to an ewaste place? Usually they're happy to sell whatever they have.

I actually need to find an e-waste place. I have some 5770's I'm sure are not worth the effort to find someone to buy them for $20.

The first computer I remember using as a kid I believe was a 486. My Mom was doing the work from home thing on that back in the early 90's lol. I think she used that until she got a Pentium II machine as I remember it was that slotted in cartridge design. Next PC I remember was an Athlon or Athlon 64 (I honestly don't remember which).

My first CPU ever was a K6-2 233 overclocked to 550MHz via jumpers, paired with a variety of cards, but mostly I used a Radeon 7000 / Radeon 9000 on it.  Had GF2 and GF4 cards too, but I think I had those later.  I mean I had computers before that too, but they weren't anything I tweaked hardware on, I was too young still.  First rig ever was an Apple II with a green 14" CRT.  Played Oregon Trail great!

For now I'm kinda just keeping my eyes peeled on ebay.  I don't have an e-waste place nearby, closest place is Portland and that's a good 6 hour drive from here.  I might make a drive this summer if the powers that be decide to open things up a little more.

Ah dang, one of the PC's I grew up with had one of those. All those PC's got moved into the shed and sat there for years. Then when my Mom moved out of that house a couple years back, pulled the hard drives out and junked them all. (We had lots of PC's when I was growing up in the early 2000's.)

Yeah in terms of PCs we had a Pentium II, and I believe a few Athlon or Athlon 64, and a couple Pentium 4's. I don't recall us having any earlier AMD like K6.

Your Pentium 2 was the same thing though. :)  Still Socket 7, could've just plopped a K6 right into your old board for the P2.

Yeah guess that's true. While I remember these PC's, was before I really got into them.

In the meantime, I'm trying to get my hands on an AM4 CPU or APU to drive my folding rig/test rig (the one with the pink aluminum open chassis). I'm trying to source one from the forums since my ebay luck is bad. I am going to have to return this Ryzen 1200 because it keep freezing at idle. I've swapped out every piece of hardware 3x over so I know it's what is defective. I knew the low $50 price was too good to be true but I guess I'm a sucker. Hopefully ebay will let me return it because the seller is saying no returns.

Anything listed as working, used or otherwise, can be returned on eBay. The seller has no choice. If you start a return for with the reason being the item is defective eBay will give the seller some time to reply but ultimately they cannot stop a return from happening. Once eBay lets you print out a shipping label, the rest is automatic and once the tracking shows the item was delivered back to th seller you will get a refund.

I had similar luck bro.  Sucks.  Bought a 2200g off ebay because there was no lower tier parts in stock anywhere.  Finally took swapping my 3600 into the board to find out the rig's fine, was just the CPU causing the idle lock ups and random BSOD's.  Guess we're looking for the same thing lol.

Good luck in your search.  And yes, you should have no problems with the return, regardless of what the seller says.  If it was sold as functioning it needs to be functioning, otherwise ebay will force the return anyway since you ticked a box saying its defective (hopefully) when filing the return.

I've widened my search now to really anything AM4, even high end. I figure it might be easier to upgrade my wife's 1600 AF and put that one on the test/fold bench. If I could find a 5600x in stock at near MSRP that would be perfect.

I buy stuff on ebay all the time and I would consider myself an expert at finding deals on ebay that are reliable. Are you in the US?

like @pioneerisloud said, doesn't matter if they say they don't accept returns. Contact the seller, ask for a return, and when/if he says no go to the "Resolution Center" and open a support ticket with eBay. They make you wait a week (IIRC) before you can ask them to step in but when they do they ALWAYS side with the buyer and they make the seller pay for return shipping, too. Just take photos of the item before you ship it back so they can't say you damaged it/swapped it.

if the seller is uncooperative they'll forcefully take the money back from the seller and you get to keep the item. I don't sell on eBay for that reason anymore, but buying is a non-issue.

Not exactly right, if the seller is uncooperative, ebay will issue a shipping label to the buyer and once the tracking shows it's been delivered back to the seller, a refund will be issued. The only way you keep the item and get a refund is if the seller OKs it, generally speaking.
