Sold a defective RX480 for over $100

A while back (before the mining surge) I met a guy who had tried to setup a mining rig with RX480 8GBs and failed to figure out what he was doing so eventually he sold all the GPUs to me. I sold them all on ebay for about $90 each at the time. All of the sales went smoothly except for one which was sent back as defective. I tested it before shipping it so it much have taken shipping damage. Anyway, today I got around to listing the defective RX480 on ebay as "for parts/not working" with a buy it now price of $110 plus shipping and it sold within about an hour. So basically I sold a defective RX480 for more today than I sold the exact same card for in working condition about a year+ ago. 

Just thought that was interesting. 

 

On top of that, these cards are selling for about $400 used/working now. Hard to believe if I had waited to sell those cards for a year they would have sold for 4 times the price.

It's amazing what mining has done to the industry. Does a 100$ gamble on a mining card that is listed as parts only seem strange? Not at all. My bet is that 100$ gamble cost a days worth of mining for whoever bought it and was worth it to find out if the person selling the thing had less knowledge about tech than he/she did.  

 

I could probably fetch 1400$ for each of my 2080Ti's w/ their waterblocks, but what would be the point as there is nothing within reason to buy as an upgrade.

yeah, mining and shortages have really increased used prices... I've seen my exact model card (Gigabyte gaming OC 5700XT) selling used for twice what I paid for it new... and some completed new listings reached 1399 USD.... spotted a used rx580 for sale on ebay a minute ago... 200$... and actually thought about buying it for my wife's old rig, which is still running a 6850HD

You should highly consider the possibility that ANYTHING listed used these days that has >6GB RAM has been used for mining and is/could be on it's last leg.  Would buy with caution.

oh don't worry, I came to my senses pretty quick... still, her system is only there for access to old files and retro games mostly... probably would be ok... but not going to pay 200$ for an upgrade to a 10+ year old pc

Get her a used 780 Ti, there are a bunch sub 100$ on ebay that would be a 344% increase in perf over her current card.

hmm... may just do that... it's an old rig, but at the same time, that old 6850 should be dead by now anyway... it was a very punished card back when she gamed on that system... before her health went down, she spent more time playing Dirt 2 and TDU2 than I did.

W1ck3d at techpowerup has a GTX 980 he is selling, not advertised though. He had two in SLI and he sold me one for $150 a couple weeks ago. High end EVGA ACX and excellent condition.

That is an even better option. I have an EVGA 970, that partially works. I wish I could get working again. The thing works flawlessly for an hour or so and then locks up the system or flashes a solid color across the screen. I thought it was thermals, but I'm not sure anymore. I don't want to pay 100$ for a WB to find out. Maybe I should ebay it as "Parts Only" for 150$ LOL

If you list it on eBay and put that it works for an hour or so in the description someone will buy it for sure.

Pretty close to listing a handful of Radeon VIIs on Ebay.  I bought all of them brand new for $550, except for 1 that I bought at launch for $700.  Currently they are selling for $1500-$2100.

 

Selling them now would allow to grab a pair of Radeon Pro VIIs that are actually more useful for me with the Infinty Fabric link and full fp64. 

 

*Edit* On top of the low price that I paid for the cards, I am basically even on the purchase already, since I have mined eth with the cards from time to time when they were idle.

Those cards put out some massive PPD. Why aren't you folding the breaks off of them? I would definitely buy one off you, not for 1500$ tho

Currently the best WUs are only about 2 million ppd.  There has been a steady decline in AMD folding ppd for the last year across all AMD GPUs.  There was a time when AMD GPUs were starting to catch up to their NVIDIA counterparts, but that shipped has sailed with the CUDA WUs.  I haven't specifically look at the latest cores, but I am somewhat sure that the hot-paths are seeing mostly CUDA optimizations.

Well that sucks, but 2 million PPD is damn good for a card. I would call that great for folding.

It's not terrible, and I can actually power limit the cards to about 225W without much of a loss in production.  Most WUs are right around 1.6M ppd.

I should sell my Radeon VII with it's waterblock.  It's been nothing but a headache anyway.  I have a 1070ti i could use instead.   I could use the money to buy a 5950x, or a 5900x....if they actually exist.

I actually found a geforce 660 2gb and listed that on ebay. Normally it would be worth maybe $20 now but it's already got bids up to ~$40 and there are still about 5 days left in the auction. Not a lot of money but still selling for more than it should be.

3x RX 550s (meant for low power office machines an order was cancelled for)

 

and god knows what else. i know theres a pair of working 5770 and a pair of 6870s in there too

Sell that 8GB 480 before the mining bubble collapses. You will get 300-400$ for that card right now easy.

You can say what you want about mining, but it makes me happy to see everyone selling old cards with profit to miners

 

@tictoc It's sad to see the production on AMD cards go down bit by bit, I had 2 5700xt's but even a 1660ti outfolds a single 5700xt at 75% powerdraw..
