  1. Cleaning the fans, oiling them, and re-timming the heatsinks always helps.....well, until its too late and it doesn't. If the motor itself is starting to wear, no you'll never get the RPM's back. If the above doesn't do enough, it MIGHT just be about time to do a full replacement. Up to you of course, I mean its still working at 5200RPM, and you'd likely see a better temp drop from a TIM change than getting those extra 800 RPM's back.
  2. I wasn't even aware of that, that's a really good suggestion! @ENTERPRISE? I do believe a similar thing was recently implemented in our reviews, so even guests could comment on the reviews. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement a "read only" feature for something like the news section, I'd personally imagine.
  3. Landscape yes. Size, idk, whatever resolution that'd look fine on standard 8.5 x 11 paper, calendar sized. I mean pixels CAN BE artsy too, so leaving that up to everyone's creative genius.
  4. Per the EHW Discord, we decided that it'd be kinda neat to create a EHW Calendar. So.......post your best "EHW Related" pictures. This is your chance to do some photo editing, put a clean backdrop, spruce up your photo skills. I want to see COLD rigs, I want to see HOT rigs. Water cooling, air cooling, keyboards, monitor setups, motherboards on fire.....whatever you can come up with that's "Extreme" and hardware. I'm going to leave the submissions up until we have enough (date not set). Once we have enough submissions, we'll run a poll for everyone to vote on what pictures are included. It'd be pretty neat to see some frozen motherboards in winter months, and hot stuff in the summer months, but that's just my own opinion. Anyway, let's see em guys! Let's make a calendar! Could make for a neat prize we could handout too for competitions.
  5. I sincerely do not mean this in a rude manner, but I don't think it QUITE works that way mate. I could be wrong, E can probably explain it a tad better, or maybe Avacado......but from what I've seen around here, you do good work, and things are offered based on your skillset and if you want to do it or not. I didn't ASK to become a reviewer, it was offered to me based on what I bring to the table. We're all in this together. And that's what's important.
  6. With what I've heard, they should've given you a lambo...... Exciting times for EHW regardless mate. Enjoy the next few years, I get the feeling that with your last message on OCN, the activity boost we saw with it, and the knowledge we already had going here.......this site isn't going anywhere for a long time except up.
  7. Note: I've never tried cleaning a mousepad, I just replace when mine get gross and I use cheapie ones. So take ANY advice I give with a huge grain of salt....... I don't imagine a little bit of Dawn would hurt. You could start off with just simply a damp towel. If you're getting fibers stuck on it like you mentioned in your OP, you might try a microfiber towel. I'd try just a damp microfiber first. I'd grab a bowl of water or something, try that. If that doesn't do it, add a drop of Dawn to the bowl. Try again, and keep adding Dawn (a drop at a time) till you're clean. I'd try to keep the solution as diluted as possible, but strong enough to clean. Then again, I've never done this so it could potentially ruin your pad. I truthfully don't know. I would certainly IMAGINE so long as you're not soaking the thing, it'd probably be just fine though.
  8. Stay tuned for next month's quote. Am taking suggestions via PM.
  9. Absolutely, 100%. "Its because of flooding hurr durr". Yeah right WD, you weren't the only plant, and it was for a few days. Doesn't excuse years worth of inflated pricing. These tactics absolutely have been used for many many years. Glad I'm not the only one catching that.
  10. Ehhhhhhh......... Been alright all things considered. I'm on discord, but I think I'm still on the old EHW discord. I guess we're moving discord servers or something.
  11. Hey, I remember BigVal too. Yeah, its bitemarks he was referring to. "Vampire Jackass".....yup, bitemarks. You're not wrong either, he's a good dude.....just really strict. Nice to see you lemans!
  12. Pretty sure I borrowed a BIOS or two, but either way that's a neat blast from the past regardless.
  13. No kidding!!!!??? Dude, you were a legend for keeping that thread going! That 771 mod is what got me into 775 setups. That picture I posted in the other thread (not trying to threadjack either)........that water cooled HTPC 771 Xeon build was inspired by your thread!
  14. It's alright over here.......... Nahhh, just kidding. Been here for a while now, can't even get back into that other place. Don't want to even if I could.
  15. You're always welcome to ask questions, so you're in the right place. Collectively we have decades and decades of knowledge around here.
  16. Well....... This was one I put together in.........2014 it looks like. Was a Xeon X5470 @ 4.2GHz, 8GB DDR2 that I'm 99% sure that kit would do 1200+, and a 7970. All water cooled, in a Silverstone HTPC case. I'm not JUST an AMD guy, I just chose all AMD because easier to make a collection if I stick to one brand lol. EDIT: I do actually have, in storage, about 150 miles away......a Q9550 build, 8GB RAM, 750Ti......in a SFF HP case, overclocked with BSEL mod to 400 FSB. It's been in storage since 2019 though, and I have no ways to get it out being its so far away right now. I don't even know if my buddy thinks its his or if its still mine by now either.....
  17. Hey, I think I know who you're talking about! Nice find! Looks like an Intel 945g motherboard. I wonder if you can 771 Xeon mod that board? I know it was possible on later Intel boards like the 965p, p35, and p45 boards. Probably doesn't take a quad core either way though, I think you need 965p or better for quads IIRC (been a while). THAT rig, not even kidding, paired with something like a 750Ti or something like that, would make a phenomenal retro gaming rig with like XP on it or something. You can have quite a bit of fun for stupid cheap with something like that.
  18. I absolutely DO know who you're talking about, and no he's not here as Andrew and E said earlier. I was a senior mod over at the place that shall not be named for years, and yeah I agree with you on that complaint. It wasn't just him (although he was the worst for it), it was also a HUGE lack of communication with the mods starting with the switch to Huddler. When nobody is talking to each other, you end up getting those hard handed mods sneaking in. I always operated on the whole, "treat others how you want to be treated" principle. *shrugs Welcome to all the new (to EHW) guys! As you can probably tell, yeah its a TAD slower around here, and a lot less questions, but we're ALL here for anyone that needs help.
  19. This. Quite a few new faces on the forum today (at least for me, I retired at OCN years and years ago). There's also been a few even my old butt can recognize. It's awesome to see more people coming in, but like Avacado said so eloquently above.....we're a "family" here. If that's cool, then welcome! Bigger families are usually better anyway. That personal touch, the modding, the "Extreme" stuff, just a general "pot" of knowledge here. If you ask me, that beats what OCN has become lately; PBO auto tune and call it a day, hurr durr my brand is betterer than urs, etc. "The pursuit of performance" motto went out the window with the users at OCN years ago, and instead it became the pursuit of X brand / hit the OC button. Nah, that's not enthusiast. /rant I could totally start using Aunty Avacado....... I like it!
  20. Welcome to the retirement party E! Having been a member of OCN since what was it, 2006 or 2007 or so, yeah it absolutely WAS a fantastic place waaay back when. I'm sad to see OCN go, however I feel blessed to have found EHW (thank you @BWG). I've gotten back into contact with a lot of you guys again. Doing the hwbot competitions I'm starting to see more familiar names from people I remember on other forums now. Some of those names are here AND on other forums even. It's wonderful seeing the OG's back at it again. 2023 and beyond is going to be OUR years guys. We're going to overtake OCN because we have THE talent here. We made OCN, now we can take it out! I mean seriously, where would OCN be at today if it weren't for all of us that made it what it is nearly 2 decades ago? Even 1 decade ago? Also what you stated about friendships E, that really speaks to me as well. This site has so much incredible talent, its insane. And on top of that talent, most of us are humble enough to admit mistakes and we're all willing to pitch in and help each other when we need it. I mean seriously, you just flat out don't get that kind of people on other areas of the internet. You just don't. @ Each and every one of us: We need to all just keep being freaking awesome. Keep helping each other, lifting each other up, do what we can for each other. Because if we don't show these other idiot sites how to run a tech community, all we're going to have left is going to be reddit. Do you want to be on reddit? No? Me neither. Innovation, modding, overclocking, just tinkering with junk.......that's what drives the tech community (in my opinion). And we have that by the truck load here.
  21. When you do, you should write us up an "Amateur Review" of it in the correct section! https://forums.extremehw.net/forum/128-amateur-reviews/
  22. Socket 754 rig is complete, and working 110% now. Was just playing Portal on it at 1080p, that X1950 PRO does an amazing job! I need moar zip ties before I take pictures. It's a mess of cables right now. One thing I didn't buy was more zip ties. -_- I'll get some next week, and I should have even more updates by then anyway. The early Socket A - 1100MHz T-Bird with a Radeon 9800XT is also now 100% done. I haven't fired it up yet, but the card should be fine (it was fine before). It's up next on the bench. Also desperately need zip ties (again) for that one to get them molexes pulled up higher. After these tonight, I have the later PS2 / ATX era K6 to build, everything's here and tested good. And hopefully by the time that one's done, I'll have figured out an acceptable PSU solution for the Athlon-XP build. These should all be 100% and ready to photograph and play with by end of February it looks like. Still short one 939 rig and the early k6 for Windows 95 due to cases still. But the rest should be about wrapping up now.
