Thing is, cases don't REALLY go "out of style". At least not in my opinion. ATX standard cases are still ATX standard afterall. We literally have over 20 years of cases to choose from if you're looking for something that's of a different style. Don't like the offerings brand new? Go look for a used case. Find one that's damaged? Fix it up, paint's cheap.

Not only that man, but 3x Opteron 180's for $150? That's $50 each just for the CPU's. That ALONE is a steal. Now I need to figure out what a Socket 939 blade can do. I have space on my rack, I could put those in my rack. I'm just not sure what they're capable of doing.
-
Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! I really need to stay off ebay!!!! He threw in a third Opteron 180, more RAM, and another cooler. I couldn't say no..... -_- https://www.ebay.com/itm/144553739279

pc gamer AMD: Moore's Law "whole lot more expensive"
pio replied to UltraMega's topic in Hardware News
I don't know, I think things might stagnate for a little while. Look at how well FSR works even on older cards today. You can use a 7970 that's a decade old today, load up Cyberpunk 2077 with FSR and enjoy good visuals and decent performance. Maybe not RT, but still good visuals. Also look at the latest and greatest GPU's right now, they're having a hard time moving product. Yeah, the 4090 is a powerhouse and a beast, but why bother unless you're at 4k / 120? I dunno, definitely a very intriguing market right now. -
Cyberpunk 2077, and Crysis Remastered are a few of the titles I'm still holding off on because my 6900XT struggles with them at my resolution. Good to know next gen cards are capable, even if having to use frame insertion technologies to get there. Looked at the pictures and stuff in the thread too, man your rig is gorgeous.

Okay, what about my post there that you linked? Please, point to where in that post that I said the 4090 is a bad card or where I attacked anyone who owns one. My gripe was about the greed from Nvidia, and my point in THAT post was that they're now asking $8,000 for a card that is NOT a full die card. Marketing it as "not a gaming card" doesn't cut it when the Titans were marketed the same. How am I wrong in that assessment and where did I say it was a bad card? Point 1 you made: I had one sentence re-hashing a previous point I had made about the cabling. You're getting upset over one sentence. Again, nowhere did I say the card was bad. I said, and I quote, "the cabling issue they had was laughable......but why fix something that isn't broken". The REST of my post was pointing out the fact that I've never ONCE said anything bad about the card itself, nor the people who bought one. The biggest gripe about it, honestly, is point number 2 you made..... Point 2 you made: The pricing. You can justify it all you want mate, the fact of the matter remains that the 4090 is the highest MSRP GPU to date (for gaming cards). The other fact of the matter is that prices have trended UPWARDS consistently for a decade now and haven't shown any signs of slowing down or stopping, only accelerated price growth. Yes, this is a problem for consumers. Yes, people should be upset about this. Yes, this is an Nvidia generated problem, although I will admit that AMD has certainly profited from these price increase trends as well. Both sides are guilty in that aspect. I understand that you have one, and that you're happy with it. I'M HAPPY THAT YOU'RE HAPPY WITH IT. (Not yelling, just wanting to make that clear). But I stand firm on my belief that facts override feelings. And the facts of the matter are that Nvidia has ticked off a lot of people lately with their anti-consumer price increases and releasing mid tier cut down die samples as "the big one" only to come out in another 3 months with a lesser cut die and mark the price up even higher. Are you still going to justify this when they release another card, "a 4090Ti" variant of some kind with a MSRP of $1999 with 1 more SM unlocked that was already on the card to begin with? What about a $2499 MSRP RTX 5090 with the full die that the 4090 should have had? Where does it stop at? The article here in question is about how "GPU sales are at the lowest point in a decade", and yet....I can't help but think that MAYBE, just MAYBE the reason why is because GPU prices themselves have been increasing for a decade, almost exactly. It's almost as if, with every price increase, less people buy them. Hmmmm. I'll tell you this much, I know I certainly wouldn't be this vocal about it if it were a $999 card or less. I agree 110% with this statement, including the bolded paragraph. The bolded sentence in the last paragraph is part of the reason why I'm so vocal NOW about Nvidia and these problems they're putting out. I'm sure most of us have been around the block a time or two, and maybe some people have forgotten the horrible things Nvidia has done in the past, or AMD, or XFX, or Gigabyte, or, or, or any of them. Enough is enough, we NEED to start being vocal about these issues, so we can have a proper hardware market again like we had 20 years ago. A GPU shouldn't cost the same as a used car. Our parts shouldn't be locked down to the point the end consumer has no rights over how the thing works. Cables shouldn't be catching on fire when there's been proper cables for years. I mean, these things shouldn't NEED to be said, but sadly they need to be. -_-

Like Sir B and Ultra already stated, I have to agree. I never once said that the 4090 was a "bad card". I'm ticked off about Nvidia screwing people over. $1600 for a $600-700 card is absolutely insane. Look at the pricing history from Nvidia's top tier cards from the past 20 years or so. You'll notice a trend starting ROUGHLY 5 years or so ago with the prices starting to skyrocket, and its not stopping with the 4090 being, yet still, more expensive than its predecessor. I mean technically this all started about 10 years ago with the GTX 680 and original Titan, with the Titan being marketed as a "professional card", but in all actuality it was a top tier gaming card too (full die). But it seems to be about 5 years or so ago that prices REALLY started getting out of hand. Again, I'm NOT saying the 4090 is a bad card. It's not. The cabling issue they had, was laughable I'll admit. Why fix something that's not broken (8 pins)? With that one issue aside, my literal only complaint about it is pricing and its been wholeheartedly an Nvidia issue, and has been for years and its not stopping. My complaint isn't about the card, or the people who bought one (seriously congrats). My complaint stems from a greedy company doing shady business practices trying to raise the prices on people (and succeeding because nobody is speaking up). It's kind of like when DLC first got going, where EA and the likes would nickle and dime you to death for content, but it really wasn't game breaking content. People were defending it back then.....oh it'll never be a game breaking thing. Fast forward to today, and there's games out there that you literally HAVE to pay for the game + multiple DLC packs just to get the full experience now. These are anti-consumer policies, and these pricing structures from Nvidia are anti-consumer pricing structures. Yes, I'm going to voice my concerns over it because I absolutely love BOTH companies equally (well, all 3 now). If you're a parent of multiple kids, and one child does something wrong, do you criticize or punish all of your kids or just the one that's acting out? Same thing here with Nvidia. ------------------------ On a PERSONAL note, I will not be buying a 4090 OR a 7900XTX (as much as I want one for my collection). Not until prices come down to more reasonable levels. I probably will end up with one (probably a 7900 because of my collection), but it won't be until I can snag a used one for half MSRP. I paid $900 used for my 6900XT and I'm thoroughly disappointed with it (for the price), even though I love the card. I'm NOT doing that again. $500 to maybe $600 is my cap I'm setting on myself for any new GPU's. If the companies cannot make a new high end card in that budget range (like they used to), then I'll wait and buy one second hand.
-
Geez, and I thought $1600 was bad...... Good thing this is NOT a gaming GPU (cough Titan's cough cough). -_- Seriously though, even in the professional sense, this has GOT to be getting ridiculous. I get that companies have hundreds of thousands of disposable income (some do) for IT upgrades every year, but this is just stupid. Almost $8,000 for a GPU that's not even fully utilized (2 locked SM's).
-
I dunno about your mining comment to be honest. I was making well over $10 / day on just a couple RX 580's and my 6900XT. Now? $0.30 per day. I'm using well over $1 / day in power. I doubt 3090's etc are doing a whole heck of a lot better. I stopped because of this too btw.

Just got a refund on my 2x 4TB 2.5" HDD's that were giving me POST problems on 2 seperate rigs, and ordered myself an 8TB and 6TB 3.5" drives instead to finish 2 rigs instead of one. Spinny rust is spinny rust, so I guess I don't "need" RAID......

Dude....again!!!??? I think its time you get a bigger car...... Something like this: If not, then you should most DEFINITELY follow Pook's advice: Seriously, start a gofundme for the bubble wrap, I'll contribute.......
-
Of course. This is why I'm obsessing over building all these......for the lol's.
-
Working on a couple of deals right now to score some Opteron 180's..... Why am I stopped at 939 and obsessed and getting 3x 3GHz chips? -_- Meh, the older rigs are going to get worked on after Christmas. Hopefully I'll have the AGP GPU's fixed by then.
-
Oh no, that couldn't possibly be what it is...... I won't buy another $1000+ card, I was talking to Sir B about this on Discord the other day. With how disappointed I am with my 6900XT (for the price), yeah that's not happening again. I'll wait till next gen and buy the previous generation used for half price.

Why would I bake a working card? Its been running benchmarks all morning. The card's fine. It's an issue with Folding@Home not wanting to work right with the card for some reason (or the driver).
-
@damric or whoever else is in charge of the Rat's Nest team........ I have absolutely zero clue why my 290x isn't wanting to fold. I just pulled the rig out from the bedroom (headless / folding before hand). Hooked it up. The rig is fine. The GPU is fine. It ran benchmarks for 90 minutes this morning, whereas folding@home crashes the system near immediately. I think I'm going to have to throw in the towel on this one and just accept that my 290x can't fold anymore. As soon as I get my Ryzen 1400 / FuryX system fully done up, I'll see about putting folding@home on that. Maybe that system will play nicer. Yes, I have the 6900XT, but I don't want to use that system for folding. And my 5700XT is too noisy, and the Vega64 is kiddo's rig (he'd throw a fit without his games). So yeah, FuryX is my next best choice for folding. Will update once I get that system going and folding (or attempting to fold anyway). Really wish I knew what was wrong. -_-

I'm in a similar situation. Back in June I fell asleep at my desk, in my chair, with my legs up on the desk. You know that "bolt" feeling in the butt of most cheap office chairs? Yeah.....that was poking directly into my lower back as I was sleeping. Woke up, and my entire lower half was numb. After a minute or two, it started getting a firey, insanely "hot" feeling burning pain. I tried walking it off, and it did eventually start feeling better after like 10 minutes or so and some Tylenol / Ibuprofen. Fast forward about a week, and my right leg "popped" out of socket and went 100% numb and it never properly popped back in right (feeling came back, but seriously bad pain too all the way up and down my leg). Ever since those two incidents, I've been diagnosed with sciatica / sciatic nerve pain. Went through PT recently, which seemed to help. The pain's back again now though, just as bad as before. Darn near to the point I can't walk again. -_- IDK what to do at this point, my doctor says I'm fine and I just have to deal with it. Sigh.....the joys of getting older.......

Canadian servers back online with OGC Map (West Coast, Derby, and Grid map all in one), and Dirty 4x4 which is supposedly as close as possible to real life Little Naches, WA state. Thank you @bonami2for getting those back online for us!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Especially you Jan. We're all thankful that you pulled through, you're doing well, and also that you kept in touch with us while things were going down. I'm also thankful for E today, for providing us this site to make some great friends (again). Personally, I'm also thankful for my family and local friends too. Much love for everyone today!

I have a Linux distro on my laptop and been enjoying Steam titles with Proton, you're right, super easy! I haven't quite figured out yet how to install non Steam titles on there though. Granted... I haven't really tried yet. I'll bet with Proton tons of titles off Steam are likely playable too since you can launch non Steam through Steam......... On topic, was playing FEAR for the first time in like a decade this evening. Apparently there's still people playing it online even. I love the fact that games with dedi servers are STILL active, whether they're "dead" titles or not.

Here we go...... microtransactions and DLC on hardware. -_- I can understand how it could POTENTIALLY be useful in the server markets, but still....c'mon Intel. -_- This is taking that "K" SKU they started back with Sandy Bridge to a whole new level. If they're doing it on server kit its only a matter of time before it comes to consumer kit.

Okay that Mac is pretty cool man! My first ever computer was a Mac Apple II, followed by a Centris 660AV, so same generation ish as that one. Awesome mod!
-
Sweet. I"m actually super stoked to be able to play on them soon, should have the old ones done around new years. Once I get things rolling, I might have to bug people for title names to look out for. I do have my old Win98 gaming collection luckily, but I know there's a ton of old games I missed out on being a child and all back then.

Creating Tables for Use in Reviews (and elsewhere)
pio replied to EHW Ai's topic in Site Suggestions
So long as we have a moderator at hand to make sure no spam comes through, I'm totally okay with allowing guests to post in review threads ONLY. I'm also okay with the review threads being "created" (manually or automatically) by the reviewer themselves. PERSONALLY, just giving the reviewers themselves the option (in their own review "thread") to delete posts as spam might also help ease the moderation load some too.......so long as we were all in agreeance that's the only thing it'd be used for. IDK, whatever is decided, I'm cool with. I just think allowing "guests" to comment on reviews would be potentially useful in driving them more into the site for sign up purposes, and potentially more engagement in total on the site. If they see that the reviewers themselves are actually engaging WITH them, they might be more inclined to sign up. Kind of like Youtubers, personally when I make a comment on a Youtube video, it absolutely incentivizes me to "subscribe" to that Youtuber if they actually respond, like, or whatever my comment. Engagement with the content creator, even at a "guest" level is going to be appreciated by other people not on the site I'd imagine. Just my 2 cents. Sounds like Jan's got the tables thing sorted. Again, wayyyy too far above my knowledge levels, but having a wider variety of tables WOULD be a nice thing to have available for us.
