The End Of An Era - OCN

Recommended Posts

..."last one leaving turn off the lights"...

...sad to see your time at OCN come to an end. As others have observed, recent changes since the takeover of OCN 'aren't all for the best'...but their loss is EHW's gain !

I know Cstk1 and have tried on Falkenyne before. I can't say I have ever spoken to Shamino or Safedisk.

OCN really meant a lot for me as it guided me when I first started to get into technology, computers and the likes. I've made friendships from it that last to this day, but it's barely a husk of what it once was. I really hope that EHW can become even half of what OCN was in its prime - but I know a lot of things are stacked against forums these days.

OCN was a great help to me back when I first put together the core components of the build I'm still using to this day (at this point, really only the motherboard) and plan to retire and part out by the middle of this year. There were a number of helpful people and threads there that helped me get more mileage out of Sandy Bridge than any other platform I've ever put together.

However, the community there did noticeably and continually decline over the years and my only two lasting memories there that haven't carried over to here (such as several intelligent and knowledgeable forum members who help make the EHW community what it is today) are 1) a 2011 thread where an OCN forum member shot up his Pentium 4 machine and posted photo proof and 2) back around maybe 2019 when some clown who probably frequented r/wallstreetbets was too much of an incoherent chickenshit to provide proof of whatever idiotic claim he was making, so he chose to flame me via PM, which I then promptly reported.

My last dozen or so posts at OCN were spent arguing with OCN brand loyalists and the VS admins about I don't even know what anymore. Once UltraMega dropped a subtle hint in a post there back when mentioning EHW was more taboo, I ended up over here and never looked back.

I am glad to see a lot of new faces here, but you all need to know just exactly where we are at right now. EHW is what OCN lost some time ago, a family. We are still in our infancy as a forum and have a long way to go before offering the robust dopamine hits that OCN can provide. We lack listings on the Marketplace and yes you need 30 rep before you can access it. I hope that we can build that section up to encourage no scam, enthusiast trading like the good ole days. We do monthly Foldahons, participate in HWbot Team Competitions (Placed top 10 this year) and we stream overclocking and volt mod sessions frequently. Again, we are a family here, we support each other and we have good content. If all that sounds good to you guys, we are happy you joined!

This.  Quite a few new faces on the forum today (at least for me, I retired at OCN years and years ago).  There's also been a few even my old butt can recognize.  It's awesome to see more people coming in, but like Avacado said so eloquently above.....we're a "family" here.  If that's cool, then welcome!  Bigger families are usually better anyway.

That personal touch, the modding, the "Extreme" stuff, just a general "pot" of knowledge here.  If you ask me, that beats what OCN has become lately; PBO auto tune and call it a day, hurr durr my brand is betterer than urs, etc.  "The pursuit of performance" motto went out the window with the users at OCN years ago, and instead it became the pursuit of X brand / hit the OC button.  Nah, that's not enthusiast.  /rant

One thing we should also keep in mind is that the success of EHW comes in part down to us adding lots of new but quality content...there's a critical mass for a site like EHW when/where vendor reps will start paying a lot of attention which will become a loop-back cycle; the trick will be to keep the quality of this site where it is when it grows.

I was a member of OCN since 2011. I no longer use the site, but have fond memories of discussions, overclocking, benchmarking, and folding in the team competition.

I bolded what you said, as this rings true personally for me in the present day with EHW. I made an account here in 2020 but a few months ago I decided to get on and actively participate. It is about the only social interaction I have besides that with my wife and retired mother, and doctors and nurses at appointments. Everyone has been extremely good to me here and given me lots of rep much faster than I expected.

As you well know, I live with severe pain issues- Chronic Pain Syndrome, Degenerative disc disease, Chronic Neck Pain, Hip impingements requiring a hip replacement, and fibromyalgia. However, getting on this community and its Discord and especially finding out others in the hobby deal with similar issues has been extremely good for me.

The social interaction and engagement I get while discussing the hobby has helped my depression, and made the pain more bearable. So thank you for creating this forum. I have been way less depressed since starting to participate. (And thanks for not filling it with Reddit, Google, Facebook, and Twitter trackers/scripts. Jeez go to OCN sometime with NoScript in your browser. It's a mess.)

Well I am glad to hear that you have found solace in a community, even better to hear that it is EHW. I know just how important it is to be part of something, but especially if their are obstacles and curveballs that life tends to throw. It can be therapeutic having an escape and others to confide in.  Yes, one of thee goals here was to have minimal scripts and tracking running on the site, it is a massive turn off to many, especially those in the I.T field with a better understanding of just what those scripts and trackers are doing. These days you cannot be ZERO tracked, that would be a fools errand, but you can certainly minimize it.

OCN was a very different place in 2010 when I first joined. I wasn't brand new to being with computers, but I was pretty new to being an enthusiast and OCN was THE place to get advice and read about so many things from the enthusiast community. These days its hardly much better than Reddit. I still post there periodically and check it everyday like I do EHW. Perhaps its out of habit, but the vibe there died years ago.

I mean they had "Buy your cocaine here" ads up last week on OCN... 😂

You've done a lot of great work with EHW over the years E and I am proud to be a part of the enthusiast community here. It may be small still for now, but I have that vibe back here.

Everyone always pushing each other to achieve more, support each other, help figure things out, teach, send parts, etc. This is the best enthusiast community and I am glad we have that back with EHW.

You guys have really helped me push my comfort zone and work at learning new things, doing reviews, and eventually I'll get brave enough to buy some stuff and do volt mods and all that fun stuff.

Keep it up!

Kind words, thank you. The mission from day one was to get that Vibe back from the good old days that I had been missing. It was not enough to have wonderful content and information, there has to be a form of continuity between members, that coming together community feel. Once EHW had got more on its feet, I definitely started to get that vibe back and it is that vibe that drives the passion! If you are not passionate about something, unless there is a reason to be there, you probably shouldn't.

I have no idea how long those posts are going to stay up there for. All of the current moderators are people who have been members for over a decade now and I don't think any of them are going to delete it, including me. It's going to have to be someone from VS who deletes it and I'm certainly not reporting them lol

Fairly sure they call that solidarity @Andrew 😛

It is wonderful to see some new faces here. It is always a privilege to have new people in the community. If anyone who is new here has any questions about the site and the EHW community, please feel free to ask. I know joining anything new can be a little jarring at first, happy to ease everyone in 🙂 Furthermore, thank you for the kind words from all. Together we can make EHW great, its all down to the community and I have faith we will all do great things!

My "Retirement" from OCN I think was needed to allow me to focus on more important projects, which ultimately is just EHW. It comes at a large financial penalty to myself, but that is how life rolls sometimes, you move forward and look for other opportunities!

Everyone feel free to spread the word, bring your friends and lets grow this family!

I need to join the HWbot events, never even knew they happened to be honest. The F@H I generally don't join as I only have a single computer right now that is somewhat okay for it, and my 2500k+GT1030 is basically burning money folding lol

You and every member of the forums are always welcome to join any of the events. I suppose I should keep a list of all the active members so that I can @ them when new events happen. I know for the HWbot Teamcup, I did add the event to the community calendar here on the site. That is something that I used to do for the monthly foldathons too, but stopped sometime back. I suppose I could resume that (If I remember :)).
