I'm going to use your post to go on a small rant.

The only reason I stopped participating at Hwbot, is because a few elite members who control HWBot control every aspect of the "competitions". The rules are arbitrary and capricious (such as LOD/Tess manipulation) and most of the competitions are basically the same pros almost every time at the top. There are a ton of awesome members and even some great information sharing, but trends became evident the more I participated there. HwBot gives you the ability to filter results by cooling options, but still assigns points in a raw format. If the points were assigned within the hardware limitations, it would make the competitions far more 'competitive' for people without exotic cooling, and the people at the top would still be the same people at the top. Even if you didn't do it by the hardware on the submission, do it within the leagues. The extreme league members are almost always going to beat the novice league members with the same hardware, they have better cooling, per the league requirements.

Most of the competition results are unattainable for 99.99% of people who buy PC hardware.  Thats not to say they arent incredible and impressive, but I felt comparing people with air cooling vs someone using LN2 on the same benchmark seems less than ideal, to me. The competitions and scoring should reflect those differences, imo. Joe Gamer who just bought a 13900KS is never going to put up the overclock that pros can put up, especially when top pros have exotic cooling and Joe Gamer has an air blower fan in a case.

This is why I really liked the one competition last year @Sugi0lover over on OC.net won, because it was current hardware, with some restrictions to keep a level playing field, and it made each person show different aspects of overclocking, RAM/CPU, etc. Its unfortunate they don't do that for all their competitions.

/rant over

I hear you, believe me. The thing is, that here we do it to have fun and bring each other closer. Is it nice to win, yes. We just love getting together and playing with old *, even if we can't beat the same people every single year. We would be happy to have you on our team if you wanted to contribute.

Preach it.

I was really excited last year as there were quite a few comps I was able to participate in with just my current hardware. This year I think there might be one? I don't have a place to store a bunch of random old hardware bougt on eBay like others do, nor does it make sense for me to spend my money there when I can be setting up a test bench.

I was very disappointed in this year's comps for Team Cup. There is basically nothing I can participate in with what I have on hand.

Same. Cheapaz Chips challenges are the best, I can buy a ~$30 GPU and slap it in my main rig. Otherwise I tend to be left out too 😥

From my understanding of the Team Cup though is that you don't "NEED" to hoard away hardware like some of us tend to do anyway.  The whole point is for our entire TEAM to be involved.  Run literally whatever you've got that you CAN run within their bench rules.  Even if its just one run.  If everyone on the site does just one run on stuff that we can run, we'd have every position filled.

I sort of agree with you but there are also things they are trying to do to make it more fun for everyone.
For example the competitions where there are stages for ambient and sub ambient cooling (G7400 iirc).

I often feel like a noob among those elite members, but for me it's a motivation to perform better.
Now for the team cup, the main goal is to get each stage filled with subs. Quantity over quality for this competition, even though it feels strange.

There are things I would love to see differently, but where else do you find a place to do this stuff online? HWBOT is awesome, even though it has flaws.
Please keep that in mind when going on a rant, the people who run the system try their best to make it a good place for everyone.

We need a lot of weird hardware and we have enough members to fill in a lot of the blanks.

Everyone here has a storage with at least some weird old hardware, with a bit of love that could be used for the team 🙂
Like I said, quantity over quality. And if someone feels like going crazy with the specific hardware they own, that's only better 💪

On a different note, the PowerColor HD3870 and the Club3D GTX285 received their first mods.
Let's hope I don't blow them up in pretesting 😅

And a weird SFF 1155 board, with some matching DDR3, a good looking GT210 and watercooling:

Cheater, doing it before the comp starts. J/K, glad you got it working. Getting mine running probably wont be as hard as getting windows running. Did you get 98se working?

Ha, I tested 3 GPU's already. Better to do it now I have a little bit of time instead of when the comp is actually going and work decides to go crazy 😂

I have gotten 98SE working a few times already.  On the K6 rig, no, not yet.  It's installing right now, I had some overheating problems on it last night while I was putting 98 on it.  Overheating problems aren't fixed yet, but its installing.  :lachen:

I have a whole bunch of CF cards on hand now, so I have no reason not to get these older ones running for the comp. 🙂  That's what I'm using for OS drives on these.  Trust me, its waaaaaaay easier using native IDE controllers on 98...... -_-
